Ah, indeed. I suppose it comes down to context then. It is interesting to note than in the case of “If you’re not for me you’re against me,” he’s speaking to the religious leadership.

Well,
Not working in action against something means that something is benefiting.

If you're actively NOT for something, then yes you are against it.

Basically, giving Jesus space to spread the word even if you're not spreading it yourself is still of benefit .

And obviously if you're against spreading it, then YOU'RE AGAINST SPREADING IT lol.
Which means you're against him.

It's pretty straightforward

I actually did not recall Mark 9:40 but immediately thought of the verse from Matthew. The exclusivity implied by the Matthew verse seems more consistent with some of the other sayings about leaving the family to follow and not serving two masters but your reference sounds like a good read.

Hayden broke his leg in the final regular season game of his senior year against Vanderbilt. I had forgotten that until you mentioned it. I guess we’re both getting old.
