2017 Vols will have the #1 or #2 ranked DEFENSE in the SEC

Yep, don't wanna give any of our schemes away to give Bye Week an advantage.

Defense was stellar in the 1st quarter. Even with bad field position because of turnovers and bad special teams we were stout. Georgia couldn't run on us and we were putting pressure on Fromm. That was the defense I envisioned seeing the entire season.

Then after Justin Martin gifted the offense a INT inside the Georgia redzone that we fumbled, the wheels came off. I think it was partially guys wearing out because of all the 3 and outs the offense. I also think guys just got down and Georgia's offense got confidence and momentum. That's when an avalanche hit us.

I still like our talent. But we're a bad football team right now in all facets. Offense. Defense. Special teams. When that happens, it's on the head coach. Butch Jones should be fired immediately.

Denial is a great state of mind.....until it isn't. D4H. Lost the SECe last year, blown out of it this year. Done. Over. Say what you want, it is what it is. Unfortunately.

So are we still going to have the #1 or #2 defense?

Hard to have a great defense when the offense is constantly putting you back on the field.

The defense didn't lose this game....could they be better? Well Always. However I see more pluses there then negatives, and some players like Bituli are becoming stud worthy. No defense does well when the offense spends that little time on the field....

It's fair to point out the D got no help from the O today but the OP's original prediction was never realistic.

And just to put it in perspective anybody remember the 2008 team? Not only #1 in total D in the SEC but #3 nationally. That team's offense was ranked next to last (Vandy) in the SEC and 116 in the nation. Really good defenses can still manage to play well even with bad offenses.

Well, that's not the defense that is reality. I've been trying to explain to you how bad our coaching really is. You should listen and learn more often.

I get a chuckle every time I see this thread. We are no where even close to a top defense.

Hey I agree.....but parts are much better than people realize. Once the game stats are logged Tennessee will be around 7th in the nation in passing D......thanks to one of the best DB's coach in the nation.

Sure everything could be better, but seeing that teams cant pass on us really makes things look worse......people are and can be one dimensional. And heck had Tennessee had the correct D on (last play vs Fla,, Tenessee would be ranked higher.....and the DB's coach did not make that call).

Eh, unsure of that right now. Sure our yardage is decent at #4 in the SEC (coming into this game) but seeing as we're also dead last in rushing yards allowed people aren't taking to the air much. There'd only been 79 pass att coming into today...tied for least in the conference. The problem is we're #8 in %, #9 in Y/A and #11 in rating.

The D did not lose this game??? Who did? You can't blame the Band for this, or special teams, or that the team was distracted by having Peyton in the house. The D gave up 41 points. I realize you see more pluses than negatives, you are not alone, there are still a large number of die hard fan-boys.

Lots of turnovers by the offense and bad special teams leading to great field position for Georgia. Defense wasn't great but they weren't the reason we lost either. They held up early and even gave us a timely turnover. We just never did anything positive offensively. And on those rare occasions we did, it ended with a turnover.

The D is certainly seeing a lot of running, because it has been porous (to be kind).

But, Tennessee has held 5 teams so far to 52% competitions, and held those QB's to an average of a 50 QBR (which is real bad QD is at 54 right now). Tennessee also has 3 int's vs only 52 competitions (5 passing td's given up vs 3 ints.......pretty good).

I know what you're saying, but I can't say the D lost this game. They were playing great, but got absolutely 0 help from any other aspect of the team.

It was a snowball effect. They were tired by midway through the 2nd quarter and it wasn't because of poor conditioning. Had the offense given them any rest, or done anything with the ball to energize them, I believe our D would've been able to keep Fromm rattled and contain the UGA rbs. It would've been a much closer game.

Our offense murdered our defense.
