Week 5 update.

After a dominating performance Tennessee has now skyrocketed to 71 overall in Total Defense

They remain 11th in the sec.


Fun fact: they are 121 in rushing d, which is last in the sec

Hard to bel even a good defense when your DE’s crash down inside constantly (leaving the outside so wide open that even a QB can run out there), your corners are 10 yards off of the football while your opponent is at your ten yard line (see last years UGA game for reference), and you line your defensive line a yard off of the ball.

Sure everything could be better, but seeing that teams cant pass on us really makes things look worse......people are and can be one dimensional. And heck had Tennessee had the correct D on (last play vs Fla,, Tenessee would be ranked higher.....and the DB's coach did not make that call).

Why even bother trying to pass on our defense when it's so easy to run all over us? It's not that our pass defense is good. It's simply untested because nobody has to even attempt to pass.

However, on defense I have zero concerns when it comes to talent or depth. Last year was a fluke for Bob Shoop. Injuries played a large factor and guys like Willie Martinez were trying to undercut his authority. This year I expect to see him look like the elite defensive coordinator he looked like at Penn State and Vanderbilt. Expect the defensive line to be among the best in the nation. Jonathan Kongbo and Darrell Taylor are NFL caliber athletes. Kendal Vickers is a starting caliber NFL DT and Kahlil McKenzie is as talented a one technique as there is. Look out for Justin Martin and Emmanuel Moseley to have huge seasons as well this year. I think both will be All-SEC caliber CBs and NFL draft picks. Also look out for Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli to turn into superstars. They might be the two most physically gifted athletes on our defense. I think both will have breakout seasons as sophomores. And finally, expect to see Darrin Kirkland Jr. take on the mantle as the undisputed leader of the defense. He's got a good chance at being a First Team All-American. Overall, the defense will be top 10 nationally and rank first or second (to Alabama) in the SEC.

Just look at the talent and experience we have across the board:

WLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr. (Jr.) / Quart'e Sapp (R-So.) / Cortez McDowell (Sr.)
MLB - Daniel Bituli (So.) / Colton Jumper (Sr.)
SLB - Austin Smith (R-So.) / Dillon Bates (R-Jr.)

CB - Justin Martin (Sr.) / Baylen Buchanan (So.)

The media will look really stupid in December when we are in Atlanta in large part because of a defense that they felt did not have a single player worthy of being voted onto any of the preseason All-SEC defensive teams.

oh shut up...let the damn man live. Not everyone had dismal hopes before the season started. Yes we want Butch gone but stop acting like you're happy we suck. Its like you'd rather be right in us sucking then us actually being good. Childish.

I know his predictions are out there but I would hope that he's right...bc Im a Vol fan...if you know what being a fan is all about. You would rather us suck so you can be right

many vols thought Shoop would finally be the Penn State Shoop, so I get where his optimism on "elite coaching," came from (plus we have good players on that side of the ball). Its petty to dig up old post from a guy who has been pretty quiet around here lately. Its childish

Yep. If we had an offense with a pulse our defense would be elite. But as it is they're on the field constantly gassed because our offense can't get a first down.

Yea and that was after Butch took the best team that Tennessee has had in a long time and lost to SC and Vandy. The 2016 Vols were by far the best team in the East.......yet with elite coaching they somehow lost to a bad SC team and a 5-6 Vandy team.

It sure didn't seem like that in the KY game. The O gained over 200 rushing yards, had a season high passer, and scored more points than the previous 5 games.........yet somehow the Tennessee run D still looked like garbage. Please explain how they are elite or could be elite again?

Gee I wonder why he's been quiet....maybe because he's been 100% wrong about everything he predicted about this team.....for the second year in a row.

Mostly because he lacketh the cojones to ever own up to being wrong.
