McCain ran a terrible campaign and Romney pandered. There is a difference between pandering and moving to the center. He should have owned and expanded on his "takers" comment. But let's nominate a staunch anti-abortionist (for example) and see what it gets us in the GE.Like McCain and Romney? That worked out so well
This is what I am talking about. The key is finding a candidate who can attract moderates and bridge the gap between the far-right and the establishment. Rubio is the most capable of doing this IMO.
Let's be real, no one was beating Obama in 2008. I think Romney was the best general election candidate in 2012, but that was a terrible GOP field consisting of lunatics like Cain, Bachmann, and Santorum. He was also effectively painted as detached from the common American, and Obama was still pretty popular. Someone like Cruz (who actually is articulate) won't win in a GE any more than Bernie Sanders will.
Regardless of your feelings about him, Carson seems to me like he is a ticking time bomb. He's made a number of outlandish statements that excite the base, but he's come close to the edge of irrational a few times. I just think if inevitable that he is going to step over it soon, and it's going to be a doozy.

I like him as a person and greatly admire his life journey, but I've never seen such an intelligent man spout so much nonsense.
I'm not sure he even wants to be President. He's been on a book tour instead of campaigning for several weeks now, but he is still the odds-on favorite in Iowa. He isn't remotely qualified for the office. My guess is he gets a cozy cabinet position like surgeon-general or he becomes a conservative commentator.
It was going up with or without the ACA.
Nothing stops. Nothing.

You may have a point if history is taken into consideration, just about every member of the VN Conservative Club of Prophets guaranteed Obama wouldn't beat Romney in 2012. Reverse curse?!
Not being remotely qualified didn't stop BHO
