I must laugh at that article but if remotely true I don't see it as a bad thing. SFW some senior O desk jockeys retire? That's a win.

Not all of them are desk jockeys. Some have and were pretty good battalion and brigade commanders.

A fetus, prior to certain age, cannot survive outside the womb. A middle schooler can. Your logic breaks down at that distinction.

That is also getting into a entire new topic of when does life begin.

My argument is the hypocritical political policies concerning abortion and welfare of the child.

What happens to someone when they use a gun irresponsibly?

Are you suggesting that people who use abortion irresponsible should go to prison too?

No what I am suggesting is that the rights of people shouldn't unduly restricted because there exist people who would abuse the right.

Does a microbe on Mars constitute life? Just curious.

Does that life deserve equal consideration under the law? Should you be charged with several hundred murders for the ants that your stepped today as you walked about?

Irrespective of whether a fetus represents life or not. The rights of the already here trump those of those that are on the way.

Texas is so opposed to abortion that it was, last year, considering a law that forced woman who were pregnant beyond the first trimester with a non-viable (dead) fetus to carry it to term as opposed to allowing an abortion.

I hope they quit. Seriously. Have fun paying your mortgage on your $900k townhouse or kids private school on a private sector job where you can walk into work on a Monday and your company is Bankrupt or bought out and your job is shipped off to some corner of the world. Get a dose of 0bamacare premiums and have fun paying into SS. Enjoy 2 weeks paid vacations and... Gasp. Working on a Friday or MLK day. The horror!

The Republicans are saying the government has the right to force a woman to have a child.

If the government has the right to force a woman to have a child it is also their place to support the unwanted child they forced to be born.

If the Republicans do not want to support the child then they should not force the child to be born. That is common sense.

I respectfully disagree Gramps. I can't speak for all Republicans, but imo I believe their stance is that a woman should not have the right to have her child killed.

As far as support, the woman could easily put the child up for adoption and therefore would not have any support. If she decides to keep it then I have no problem with the government providing a reasonable level of support given a few conditions...

1) the woman isn't already receiving government benefit for 2 other children (or plug whatever number in you feel is reasonable... but at some point they should stop having children if they can't support them)

2) the government fix the problem to ensure that any "support" can ONLY BE USED FOR SUPPORT OF THE CHILD and not any other purchases. This abuse of child support has been going on for far too long.

That right there is a makor problem with the Republican party, imo. They want to use morality to end abortion. They want to ignore morality when it comes to the welfare if the same child.

How is that different from what I said. We are both saying the Republicans want to end abortion and make them illegal.

Jeb Bush is paying people to come to his rally in Iowa today.

A fetus is not a child until it reaches a certain age. Children can breathe on their own and survive outside the womb. A fetus cannot.

As for killing the child...

What about the morning after pill? It is just a souped up BC dose that may prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. Is that murder? Should they be illegal too or is there a distinction you are willing to draw?

Couldn't the woman drink alcohol, eat raw oysters, drink unpasteurized milk, fish high in mercury or are you legislating what she is allowed to consume during pregnancy, as well. Are you demanding that women all get proper prenatal care? Does this rule only apply to women considering an abortion or can you force medical care on those women that may object on religious grounds?

Accidents and crime happens.

Rape, incest, condom breaks, birth control doesn't work etc. All pregnancies are not intentional.
And I think this is a huge hypocrisy from the right. If all life is sacred, there should be zero exceptions. zero. If mom is gonna die, well, she made that choice to procreate.

Yep one cannot make morality a huge issue on on thing then turn around and completely ignore it on another. That is the point I have been trying to make.

I fully expect this same argument from you on the next gun rights thread.

hog88 - it is an argument that I, internally, struggle with. I don't want to interfere too much with the peoples' right to own guns, but there are limits. I don't know the answer to the gun issue, but I think both sides have blinders on to some degree.

I have owned guns. I have a carry permit. I do not own guns today, not because I am against them, but because I made a decision that I felt was right for my situation. I have a 13 year old daughter who is home alone a good bit and has 13 year old friends over and they do 13 year old crap. I live in a good neighborhood where crime is almost non-existent. I found I worried more about my daughter or her friends getting into my gun cabinet than I worried about protecting my family. My situation. Everyone's is different. I will probably own guns again in the fairly near future. I miss going to the range on a regular basis, though I do get to go hunting from time to time and depend on the kindness of friends to loan me a rifle.
