2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Here is the deal on Memphis-Tennessee series. It hurts Memphis Nationally absolutely to not play Tennessee. It does not hurt Tennessee nationally not to play Memphis. I reiterate again that Memphis outside of Memphis is just not known that much nationally. Sure they're ranked and so is Marquette. Vanderbilt is more known nationally than Memphis. Alot of that is the SEC. The SEC is a powerful conference in Basketball like it or not Memphis. Not playing Tennessee in basketball is a big mistake by the backwards ass Ath. Dept in Memphis. Sure they'll keep playing basketball and do okay but nationally they will stay along the lines of Providence. Hell San Diego St. and Gonzaga are more known nationally than Memphis in basketball. I suppose the Grizzlies help a little. That is just the way it is.

Yes it does.

Well thought out argument. Not playing Tennessee is a way to protect a rich recruiting turf that doesn't exist in Knoxville. Improved chances in recruiting local talent leads to better teams which can lead to better performance nationally. Coaches still have to deliver, but their life gets a bit easier when regional schools aren't rolling up into their backyard every other year to play in front of local recruits.

The only benefit to playing Tennessee is to satisfy a fan base that wants to see the matchup.

Also, Memphis goes from C-USA to the Big East. Even with the future of the Big East, it moves Memphis up a notch on national TV broadcasts.

Thanks for explaining yourself. Based on Memphis' ability the last 5-10 years to pull nationally top ranked recruits from outside Memphis, I'd have to disagree.

I never said they couldn't recruit outside of Memphis. I never said they were an unknown. What I said was that other than Memphis the Tigers are just not considered relevant. Like I said programs like Temple, Gonzaga, SD ST. hell even Providence are more known than Memphis. The Grizzlies help sure. But they don't carry the National prominence that a school like Tennessee does. Vanderbilt carries more of a National flavor than Memphis does. Thats why losing a game or cancelling a game with Tennessee that helps them from a National perspective is the dumbest thing they could do. To the Memphis guys and in Memphis sure Memphis bball is big. Outside of Memphis it just isn't. And football hurts immensely thats why not fielding a good football program is stupid as well even UCONN was smart enough to at least do that.

Yeah and in the last 5-10 years you have been playing Nationally Televised prominent matchups every year against Powerful Tennessee including in 2008 when it was #1 vs. #2. And you sit there and say losing a game like that doesn't matter!! Look you aren't Indiana or Kentucky. Those 2 schools can cancel a series and it hurts neither one bit. Memphis cancelling Tennessee is a cop out and a major mistake by your AD from a National standpoint. It doesn't hurt Tennessee it hurts Memphis. I could make an argument that Memphis is on a par with Southern Miss if I wanted to. So absolutely cancelling Tennessee (if you want to be known nationally) is a horrible mistake.

You have complete lost it!!!!

Memphis in NO WAY is hurt by not playing utenn. Memphis is a top 25 basketball program and plays a national schedule, recruits nationally, and has consistantly pulled in top 10 recruiting classes and been preseason ranked in the top 25 more the greater part of this decade.

Please tell me exactly what Memphis gains by playing utenn instead of say like Xavier, Arizona, or Texas?

Memphis has been to the FF 3 times...that last thing we are worried about is playing utenn. It hurts Memphis ZERO....we will just schedule another BCS team. THAT IS ALL utenn IS...A BCS TEAM. nothing more, nothing less.

I'm a Tennessee fan.

Please make an argument that Memphis is on par with Southern Miss in basketball. I would enjoy that very much.

No you are abosolutely wrong. Once again your perception in Memphis is what you said above. Yes they're ranked and they can recruit because of the talent in Memphis. No argument there. But understand outside of Memphis they are mostly considered irrelevant. When I lived in Virginia I heard about Georgetown the ACC and of course Tennessee. Memphis was largely unheard of. When I lived in CA it was UCLA USC and the SEC. Tennessee was more known than SD ST and that was when Marshall Faulk was running the ball. Memphis was unheard of. Still is. From a National perception Gonzaga is more known. Thats the way it is.

I think you are arguing football prominence instead of basketball prominence. There's no argument to be made that Memphis is a prominent football program.

You have a first time coach at Memphis pulling in top national talent. How would these players even know about the program if it wasn't relevant nationally?

Okay I am out of here dude to watch a nice slate of SEC Football. But ask yourself Mr. Membjs, tonite is Austin Nichols going to watch Mempuss play ECU or will he watch the Vols tangle in an SEC Battle with Mississippi ST. Thus ends the argument!! Go Big Orange!!

Dude Pastners entire team is from Memphis except for a player from Cameroon.

BTO talking to recruits? Anyone else not feel great about that?

BTO you bring in good info, but please do not go down the road as Sab.

Seriously just looking out for your best interests.

Don't know who Sab is, and if you took the time to read my stuff you'd realize how foolish what you posted sounds.

I run a recruiting site, much like rivals, scout, 247 etc etc...this required me to communicate with recruits...not sure what you're getting at here...

You may want to check your history.....Memphis has been to one final four in 1973.

uhmmmmmmmm

No you haven't.

Yes we have and the whole country knows Memphis as a FF program. We just are lucky enough to have a cool * beside our 1985 and 2008 final four trips that you should remember watching Memphis compete in.

PS: recruits know Memphis is a FF program...you will come along eventually!

Even at best case scenario, Memphis going to the final four three times in its history doesn't make it a final four program. That's retarded. Duke, UCLA, UNC, UK, etc laugh at your stupid claim.

I would compare Memphis to Xavier maybe in notoriety nationally but I still think Xavier might be ahead. Look dude here's the deal just for this year. Memphis will be known in basketball for 1 game and that will be the matchup with powerful Tennessee in Thompson Boling Arena. It will be nationally televised and the Memphis media will play it up because of course Tennessee is a national program. And then Tennessee will win and that will be that. After that Memphis basketball will disappear into nothing but obscurity for 2 and a half months playing in the pitiful conf USA where your scores won't even be listed in sports pages across the country. Meanwhile Tennessee will play 2 Nationally televised monsterous match-ups with Kentucky and Gameday will grace Knoxville in February for a mammoth conference match-up with Florida. Finally March madness will arrive and Memphis will make a token appearance where they will get a favorable match-up with ST. Louis again and they will get upset because Pastner can't coach. Thats the scenario and so don't go telling me that Memphis is considered any more than an after thought for almost the entire college basketball season.
