'19 CA QB JT Daniels (Georgia commit)

I know that's a popular excuse... but JG's first 2 years were in the same system. It was Jones' baby. I will agree that Jones' system sucked but JG was no more disadvantaged in that way than Dobbs or Dormady.

JG's issue though is not very likely system related. If it were then his comfort developed over the course of last season would have eliminated those issues. The announcer in the bowl game pretty much nailed it. JG doesn't anticipate plays... he doesn't read and react quickly enough. He has to "see" a receiver open rather than seeing where he's going to be open. This apparent innate inability has manifested itself in different ways. For a long time, he just ate the ball and took tons of sacks and physical abuse. Even last year he was one of the slowest QB's in the SEC for getting the ball out.

JG was helped a ton by JJ and MC last year. They were able to make contested catches to bail him out of late throws. JJ was excellent after the catch. That's gone now. JG MUST become a better QB or else needs to step aside.

FWIW, I don't know if Daniels would be the answer or not. UT already has 6 guys listed as scholarship QB's on the roster. I don't see where you can put him without pulling a scholarship from someone else.
Hill’s not on scholarship yet...so 5.

And if that's the case, I can't argue with them. If I was certain of that outcome, I wouldn't want to potentially disrupt it, either. But none of know the outcome, so it is all conjecture.
True, including JT Daniels. that outcome isn't any more certain than HB.

This is one of my favorite all-time threads. It is right up there with the debate as to whether UT should take Landon Dickerson after we had been complaining about our OL for years (he went to Bama and started all 13 games and was named second-team All-SEC), whether we should take Cade Mays because he said mean stuff about the Vols as a high school senior, and so on. Yea, we should probably be satisfied with JG who lost to GEORGIA STATE AND BYU LAST YEAR AND WAS BENCHED AGAINST UK AND IU BECAUSE HE WAS AWFUL and turn down a guy (assuming he’s actually interested) that is predicted to be a first day NFL draft pick. Yea, that makes sense.
The reason it is so highly debated, IMO, is that every time there is a grad transfer QB, somebody thinks we need him. This case is different, it seems as Daniels is a legit talent who could potentially help us, but many, including me, dismiss most of the QB transfer threads because many times, the "prospect" is slaw.

After watching that 247 video posted yesterday and listening to this interview:

I really really want JT Daniels on this team...

You should. He is more talented than any QB we have on our roster with the exception of POSSIBLY Harrison Bailey. Leaving HS a year early to play for an average USC team was probably not in his best interest. Getting injured certainly wasn’t in his best interest in the first game of year 2. That year amounted to a redshirt season and a developer like Jim Chaney can develop and coax out the natural talent that he has. I am fine with him and Bailey battling it out.

If the Vols are out for Zach Evans and we have no room for Chase Hayden....

.... then I’d expect JT Daniels to be announced as transferring to Tennessee in the coming days.
Curious why we would not have room for Hayden, but have it for Daniels or Evans. I'm pretty sure we have room for 1 guy, at least.

I think you can make it work. No guarantees JT would be ready day 1. JG could start opener and if he doesn’t take the next step you have a great option to put in mid season. This allows JT to take his time to get healthy and pick up offense. It also allows you to keep the Bailey redshirt if Jg falls flat. If JT is legit as many expect he is, he could only be here next yr or the yr after as he will be eligible to go pro after this upcoming season. So it really shouldn’t have any affect on Bailey or future QBs. More on JG and how much staff belives I’m him/Shrout/Maurer

I get it. UT has not succeeded with its QB transfers so far and there's a stigma attached to transfer QBs that has persisted in a lot of way when transfers at other positions are more accepted. While Chryst was pretty recent, I think the times are changing with respect to QB transfers. It used to be a near lock for a flame out but now you have OU on a string of successes with transfer QBs, Burrow at LSU, Fields at OSU, and so on. I really don't know if Daniels is better than our guys on the roster but I can assure you I am willing to find out if the coaches are willing to find out.

I just want to score touchdowns in the red zone again. The most frustrating part of the last two years is that we can get it there and can’t score. To a point where it’s just unbelievable.

We have had TERRIBLE OL and QB play inside the 20 for 4 years

Why are we always in this recruiting drama and then barely miss out? I can feel it. Lol
To be fair, our recruiting when it comes to elite transfers especially is elite. Case Mays, Aubrey Solomon and potentially JTD all in 14 month span, all former top 20 overall players. Pretty impressive

Uncertainty and unnecessary QB play is what CJP has had to work with. Uncertainty in how the young QBs would be in game and unnecessary decisions by a seasoned QB. CJP i think did pretty well managing the situation but a lot could have gone worse if he didn’t understand the players the way he did.

You’re totally not even factoring in the fact our freshman QB and RS Soph played better than a Third year veteran starter.this whole forum agreed and understood the fact they would show mistakes in games because one was a freshmen and the other hadn’t been in a game but both still showed high potential and promise (JT verses SC) and (BM verses Georgia) compared to JG who we had seen zero improvement from over 3 years and costed us 1 game being selfish against bama..I can’t stress how much I want him gone because he isn’t good and if Fulmer was coach he would have never seen the field again after what he did at bama so I don’t fault Pruitt for taking the job because nobody else wanted the damn job.we obviously had no idea what was really going on within the university or just how bad it was but I fault him for being too Lenient and forgiving when it comes to JG.
