'19 CA QB JT Daniels (Georgia commit)

Getting the best transfer qb has been a ticket to the playoffs in recent years. This would be an enormous get. Not sure how anyone can’t see that. Joe burrow, Justin fields, Jalen hurts. Time and again this has proved critical
And Baker and Kyler.... I just wonder how long he will take to make a decision. Wonder if he's going to try and wait to take visits.

If he makes a decision, assuming the 2020 season makes, in whatever form, and it is counted as his last season, well, this is a pickle for him isn't it?

If he waits to make a decision to wait till the last minute, so to speak, he may miss his window of opportunity in the Power 5.

When we have won games, it normally came from position players stepping up and not from QB play. Auburn in '18 was our WR winning so many jump balls. USCjr last year was special team (Callaway punt return). Our WR have helped our QB play and I can't think of many times that they hurt our QBs off the top of my head.

Sorry but this is categorically false.

Agree. Arguing against is just wanting to argue. Fill up the QB room, best man wins. A 5* coming out of USC that Tee knows and recruited while there tells me a great deal. His freshmen season was acceptable. If he had not been injured early last season we probably would never be seeing him in the pool.

That trend must have started after Keller Chryst...

This is one of my favorite all-time threads. It is right up there with the debate as to whether UT should take Landon Dickerson after we had been complaining about our OL for years (he went to Bama and started all 13 games and was named second-team All-SEC), whether we should take Cade Mays because he said mean stuff about the Vols as a high school senior, and so on. Yea, we should probably be satisfied with JG who lost to GEORGIA STATE AND BYU LAST YEAR AND WAS BENCHED AGAINST UK AND IU BECAUSE HE WAS AWFUL and turn down a guy (assuming he’s actually interested) that is predicted to be a first day NFL draft pick. Yea, that makes sense.

1. He enrolled an entire year early and played his freshman season when he should have been a HS SR.

2. He played behind an offensive line that was worse than what Tennessee trotted out at times during the early portions of JG's career as a starter.

3. His numbers were pretty pedestrian as a freshman, but considering points 1 and 2, it isn't hard to understand why he may have struggled a bit. Still, the natural talent is there, and he knows Tee Martin, so there is a level comfortability and familiarity with him, even if it will technically be a "new" system of Chaney's.

I'll take the unknown upside of this kid over the known average, at best, ability of Guarantano, and let Daniels, Bailey, and Maurer/Shrout battle it out in 2021. I say all of that as a fan of HB, but I don't believe he is the second coming of P. Manning that some of our fans seem to believe he may be. If I were convinced that Bailey had an absolute 3 year starter and 1st rd pick sort of future ahead of him, I may be more hesitant to bring in talented competition that could possibly disrupt that.

Lol. JG had played behind some of the worst OLs in all of CF for most of his career as a starter.

So we should be excited about a QB who is an unknown, who played subpar against subpar competition and because he COULD be a projected first day NFL draft pick? Oh and BYW, who was the QB that led us to 8 wins again?

They weren’t that good Ron. I liked MQ and JJ but they were middle of the road SEC WRs. Also where is the proof that JT is better than any QB we have now? I think most are assuming because of what he was ranked coming out of HS that he would come here and be an instant upgrade. Maybe he would be but I haven’t seen any data that reiterated that.

Just curious as to how this conclusion holds any weight considering 1 QB knew he would get pulled if he messed up on one drive and the other was injury prone?...Pruitts handling of the QB’s has been questionable and by the flip of a coin has worked in his favor..No head coach or any coach in America would run the QB situation like he has..it causes uncertainty and unnecessary pressure on a QB to perform well on top of having 11 other people after him or waiting on him to screw up..there is no doubt in my mind that if you gave BM or JT the same amount of reps they gave JG with Certainty that he was or could be the QB going forward and getting a fair shake at it,you would see a totally different offense and at certain points we did.Great Game Performance comes with game reps and they never really got enough of those to be absolutely fair.

I think that is why you see some hesitancy with some of the fan base as that is exactly what many do see for him.
And if that's the case, I can't argue with them. If I was certain of that outcome, I wouldn't want to potentially disrupt it, either. But none of know the outcome, so it is all conjecture.

Never said JG played behind a great line, or even an average line. You focused on what was probably the least JT Daniels-focused part of my post to respond about Jarret Guarantano. The post isn't about JG.

He's almost coming across as a troll at this point

Uncertainty and unnecessary QB play is what CJP has had to work with. Uncertainty in how the young QBs would be in game and unnecessary decisions by a seasoned QB. CJP i think did pretty well managing the situation but a lot could have gone worse if he didn’t understand the players the way he did.

JG first year with the same OC im interested to see what he does... I wouldn’t mind JT but we do not need him at all...
I know that's a popular excuse... but JG's first 2 years were in the same system. It was Jones' baby. I will agree that Jones' system sucked but JG was no more disadvantaged in that way than Dobbs or Dormady.

JG's issue though is not very likely system related. If it were then his comfort developed over the course of last season would have eliminated those issues. The announcer in the bowl game pretty much nailed it. JG doesn't anticipate plays... he doesn't read and react quickly enough. He has to "see" a receiver open rather than seeing where he's going to be open. This apparent innate inability has manifested itself in different ways. For a long time, he just ate the ball and took tons of sacks and physical abuse. Even last year he was one of the slowest QB's in the SEC for getting the ball out.

JG was helped a ton by JJ and MC last year. They were able to make contested catches to bail him out of late throws. JJ was excellent after the catch. That's gone now. JG MUST become a better QB or else needs to step aside.

FWIW, I don't know if Daniels would be the answer or not. UT already has 6 guys listed as scholarship QB's on the roster. I don't see where you can put him without pulling a scholarship from someone else.
