'19 CA QB JT Daniels (Georgia commit)

I understand Daniels was very highly rated before playing college ball. Did he end up being that impressive at USC?

His stats were pretty pedestrian. 15 TDs and 11 INTs. This fan base would get riled up pretty quickly if we had someone take care of the ball so poorly.

I guess I'm mainly just seeing everyone accept that he'd be an upgrade, but no testimony as to why we can be so sure.

Peyton freshman and junior years were not significantly better than JT’s freshman. Soph and Sr seasons he had double digit INT’s. Should see most improvement in a QB in his 2nd year as starter. I would think JT is primed and ready and could make a significant impact in our QB play over last year.

1. He enrolled an entire year early and played his freshman season when he should have been a HS SR.

2. He played behind an offensive line that was worse than what Tennessee trotted out at times during the early portions of JG's career as a starter.

3. His numbers were pretty pedestrian as a freshman, but considering points 1 and 2, it isn't hard to understand why he may have struggled a bit. Still, the natural talent is there, and he knows Tee Martin, so there is a level comfortability and familiarity with him, even if it will technically be a "new" system of Chaney's.

I'll take the unknown upside of this kid over the known average, at best, ability of Guarantano, and let Daniels, Bailey, and Maurer/Shrout battle it out in 2021. I say all of that as a fan of HB, but I don't believe he is the second coming of P. Manning that some of our fans seem to believe he may be. If I were convinced that Bailey had an absolute 3 year starter and 1st rd pick sort of future ahead of him, I may be more hesitant to bring in talented competition that could possibly disrupt that.

Pretty bad when Drew Richmond is considered a upgrade.

What I don't understand is how every expert who has opined on this has said confidently that this would be an enormous upgrade for Tennessee and there are still people on here going "prove it to me, bro." These guys are professional analysts, their word is more than good enough for me. Also, that "7-5" comment in the 247 video should resonate with a few people.

I actually posted my comment after failing to find ANY analyst giving a full assessment of his tools and performance after a year at USC. What I did find a lot of was what I call "echo chamber" analysis from folks citing his pedigree, that he should have been still in HS during his first year in college, and that his O-line was bad. That's all useful supporting info, but secondary, and not the direct assessment that led me to make my post. (JG's secondary info is also very forgiving).

Do you have any link to a hard writeup of his skill set, updated after a year in college?

Nope. But a number of people I've seen post about him covered him or the PAC12 and said his skillset is tremendous. I haven't searched for a post-year-one scouting report, but I don't really feel the need. I'm no QB scout or film junkie, so I'll take their word for it.

Our QB play was tremendously poor last year, so I just don't get the opposition to bringing in someone who could elevate our offense. He may not pan out, but as the video states, it's a risk winners take.

In God we trust, all others bring data.

Opportunity cost. Team distractions. Unwanted reputation as a reckless opportunist if Daniels turns out to not be ready and/or this was poorly thought out.

Ignore the talking web heads whose job it is to sell clicks. There's a reason they are at their keyboard and not doing the hard human work on the sidelines.

What I don't understand ...

Shouldn't be hard to understand. Some folks are more needful of updated info, while others are more content with the indirect. Neither group should "not understand" how the other can exist. Especially not in a forum so focused on evaluation, information exchange, and prediction.

He is one of the most accomplished quarterback in California high school history. Daniels threw for more than 12,000 yards and 152 touchdowns in three seasons at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), leading the Monarchs to state and national titles back in 2017.
Have u seen JG play. Absolute no brainer.

Ehh. One kid shouldn't provide so much angst. If he comes in and is a beast -- awesome. If not, JG and HB battle it out. Either way, we're likely to be better at the position this year. I say bring it on.

I do wonder why some people are so skeptical of this. If some former all world pass rusher from Clemson or Bama decided to transfer under the same circumstances, everyone would be clamoring for the staff to reach out. Why the big issue at QB? Cuz someone might transfer out?

Just throwing my 2 cents in here but I say take him, if HB wants to be the man, then go out and beat any and all competitors out there, I just want a competent QB, IDC if his last name is Bailey, Daniels, Guantanamo or whatever his name is, Shrout, Maurer, Hill, or heck for that matter Holliday, Idc I just want a QB who as at the VERY least reliable and obviously would prefer better than that, but the more competition the merrier in my opinion

I think that is why you see some hesitancy with some of the fan base as that is exactly what many do see for him.

If you wanted to bounce back and prove everyone you aren’t x, y, or z your looking really hard at Tennessee right now. Daniels has anchors up front with veteran leadership. The perfect place to resurrect his college career.
