'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

Like it or not, those ignorant clichés are being used against him. Not to mention how ridiculous and desperate they sound, not only to fans, rival fans, and rival coaches who are sure to use it against him in recruiting, but also to prospective recruits.

I'm fine with Butch caring about kids, but after failing to live up to expectations, these type comments (champs of life, and now this) just sound like an awful attempt to save face for continued underperformance.

The clichés are being used against him by our own fans. Like Nick said, if we shrug it off it is a non story. The other fan bases may point at it for a day but they'll forget about it tomorrow. We are the ones that harp on his comments for months on end. By the way, I liked the comment. I'll take a kid that wants to compete and get better everyday over a 5* diva like Hurd or PW. Where did they get us? They quit mid-season when we needed solidarity. Give me more Barnetts, Suttons, and John Kellys.

I doubt that coaches use this against him as much as they do the numerous posts (made by the geniuses on message boards) implying that CBJ is a lame duck coach who will be gone in 2018.

I like how every Nega is saying that "rival coaches will use it against us" when the same rival coaches SAY THE EXACT SAME LINE a day or two later

I'm not a Butch hater, but I think our fans being upset, embarrassed even, by those statements is justified. Those type comments sound so amateur league. They wreak of excuses and justification for what he assuredly knows is underperformance. People are tired of hearing that same crap 4 years later. I'm not ready to fire him on the spot, but I can sympathize with fan frustration at those comments. Butch would be better off just keeping his mouth shut.

I think you are underestimating the amount of ridicule Butch and our program receive regionally and nationally from the media. This isn't exclusive to our fans, though they certainly don't help the cause. The way I found out about the "5* character" comments was through a headline from a CBS writer. He also referenced the "champions of life" comments and the article was obviously not flattering.

Like Butch and many others here, think this class is better than its ranking. I just think he could have said that and left it at that.

I'm far from a "nega", and these type comments are regional and national news because most other coaches DON'T say stuff like that.

These are the exact type comments we'd be blasting Muschamp, McElwain, or Smart for making. If you don't believe that, you're fooling yourself.

I'd say both are being used, but you're right. Calling for Butch to be fired when it was obvious he wouldn't be did nothing but hurt the perception of our program and its stability.

Chris, I am not sure if you visit the recruiting thread. I shared this last night. I was flipping through channels and ran by the Longhorn Network. They had a signing day recap and were scrolling quotes by Tom Herman on the bottom line. I literally paused it and read them frame by frame. Exactly the same type language that Butch used. Other coaches do say that type stuff, and some think it but may not say it. The difference is that a portion of our fanbase is pissed off and are happy to make fun of it. This doesn't even consider Matt Rhule's "champion of life" comments at his introductory PC.

I think it's different to say it before you've coached your first game (Rhule and Herman) than after you've just failed to win your own conference division when you were picked as a national championship contender.

If Butch said those kind of things in year one, people would be more forgiving. Four years in, no championships, and a program that some would argue is at a crossroads, I think those type comments are judged differently.

As you said, "some think it and might not say it" is probably best deployed in Butch's case.

You are right on the mark. The so called fans out there complaining about what Jones says either don't follow football much or are so blinded with Jones hate that they don't admit that other coaches say basically the same thing. Saban is the world's best at coach speak but he produces so nobody cares. Remember its all about the process.

I understand that argument, but people are also making fun of the exact statements without the context. "Who would say 'champions of life'?" It isn't only being dissected in its context (i.e. 4 years in). What I find humorous is that Butch gets killed for his statements when other coaches are literally saying the exact same things. To be honest, and I hate saying this. We do have a very loyal fanbase, but we also have some who are just silly spoiled and who exhibit signs of what I will call "fake outrage." Some of the things that I have seen criticized on this board are just assinine.

The last thing is that Butch said "these kind of things" in year one. The man hasn't changed. That is why I don't take his statements personally and really don't get worked up about them. He has said the same type things for his entire tenure. It is just now our own fans have to make it headlines.

And he literally said "champions in life" during his NC conference. So did Dabo

Definitely agree with the bolded.

I agree with Glitch.

I don't necessarily disagree with him.

They actually just referenced and poked fun at Jones and his "5* heart" comment on ESPN Recruiting Nation while discussing Michigan of all things. Completely unprovoked. I'm just saying this is more of national punchline than some want to admit. It isn't soley perpetuated by our fans.

ESPN goes out of their way to make fun of Tennessee. This is fact. Not sure why you're surprised

That was seen in the draft last year. They won't be laughing this year when we have 3 names in the first 2 rounds, maybe 2 in the first

ESPN doesn't have an axe to grind with Tennessee. I know it's funny to joke about how "ESPN hates us", but come on. They are currently destroying Baylor as I type. Does ESPN hate Baylor too? We only believe that because we pay closer attention to every mention of Tennessee on ESPN and frankly, we've given them plenty more bad ammunition than good over the past 10 years.

Edit: Just got a "5* heart" mention on College Football Live as well. ESPN hates us again.

While I won't go so far to say that ESPN hates us, they certainly are trying to drive stories these days instead of "reporting" stories. My brother and I have discussed this that they are turning into a talk station instead of a reporting station. They want to drive the message, thus, the fans are only getting the message that is being presented. We have discussed that the only thing we watch now on ESPN is the games themselves. Not sure the last time I have watched more than 5-10 minutes of even Sports Center. Just not all that interested in people telling me what to think.

I honestly think many are more sour about last season than some fans because they put their reputation on the line by saying Tennessee will win the East. To them their reputation is more important than their lives. So of course the only way they know of getting revenge is to ridicule Tennessee over every little thing. Much like some of our fans.

Are they saying the same about Herman and Texas? No? Then they hate us
