I do think there may be some merit to the idea that picking Tennessee hurt certain people's credibility, and those people feel let down by Tennessee. That doesn't equate to "ESPN hates us", I don't think. I also don't think ESPN, or any other media outlet is being picky over every little thing. This is a story because it sounds ridiculous to people who aren't emotionally invested outside of Knoxville. Like I said, if Muschamp, McElwain, or Smart had said this, there would a mile long thread dedicated to running them into the ground by the very one's defending Butch for saying it.

My brother and I have discussed this that they are turning into a talk station instead of a reporting station. They want to drive the message, thus, the fans are only getting the message that is being presented. We have discussed that the only thing we watch now on ESPN is the games themselves. Not sure the last time I have watched more than 5-10 minutes of even Sports Center. Just not all that interested in people telling me what to think.

I definitely agree. If you want to expand that theory, that is becoming the media in general, not just ESPN.

Butch Jones is not stupid. There's an old saying in business---any free publicity is good publicity. What you guys don't realize is that all of these networks are talking about Tennessee. As long as they mention Tennessee, we're ahead of the game. They should be talking about Alabama and Clemson but it's Tennessee. Free publicity boys and Butch knows it. Keep talking bad about him though. I'm sure he's loving it.

I couldn't disagree more and have never agreed with the adage that "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

Paul Finebaum just called for Baylor's program to be shut down. He literally encouraged kids not to go there, in those exact words. I have listened to two straight hours of exploits of Baylor program transgressions and allegations. And you think that is good for their program?

Interesting point. Kids aren't going to not go to a school because the coach says lame cliches. But publicity will get the school noticed and talked about which recruits do like

Oh definitely, but if I'm a parent or a recruit that saw that, no way am I considering them. No way was that publicity beneficial to Baylor.

And to be fair to Finebaum, he's a columnist, not a reporter. His job is to be opinionated, not simply report stories.

If Butch said those kind of things in year one, people would be more forgiving. Four years in, no championships, and a program that some would argue is at a crossroads, I think those type comments are judged differently.

As you said, "some think it and might not say it" is probably best deployed in Butch's case.

Wait, so you think other SEC coaches are more likely to log on to Volnation and read a bunch of rando comments and use that in recruiting pitches, rather than read published news stories with direct quotes from coaches? Alright...
