'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

He has recently dropped 20 pounds. Weighs 265 now according to his twitter

That's good to hear...and sometimes when recruits get in a S&C program they don't gain weight they just reshape what they have...Emerson at a chiseled 265 could be a terror at SDE...that's what I'm hoping for in all honesty...we need DE's in a bad way

Totally agree! If we get both Litaker and Lawless, we are in great shape in the middle. We need a terrorizing DE!

I think it's because they are recruited to UT by the staff as Ends then they are suddenly moved out of the blue. This is one thing I hope changes now that Hoke is running things on the DL. I was never impressed with how the DE's have been handled or developed. And before people say Barnett, that guy was a beast the moment he stepped on campus. Trying to move Kongbo and Phillips to DT was idiotic IMO. They tried to do the same thing with Hendrix and it was a big reason why he left. All of them were recruited as DE's, hyped up by the staff and then they tried to move them all after the season started. They are going to need those two back at DE this year or we are in real trouble.

I understand and agree with this for the most part.

But the flip side is that our DT depth was so bad in 2014, 2015, and 2016 that they almost had to try someone or another out at DT. I kinda see both sides of the situation.

Id also say it was a good thing kongbo and phillips were tried out at dt earlier in the season as we wound up needing them there later.

I won't lie last year losing 3 out of 4 top DTs on your roster is rough on anyone.

Yes sir, I was underwhelmed by Strip for sure. The amount of talent we brought in on the DL seemed to be wasted. Our D-line should look like Clemson on the field with the talent/athleticism we brought in.

I've never understand all the hype around Stripling over the last four years. Heard it said a few times that he was probably the best pure fundamentals coach that we had on staff. Just seems to me that overall his group has been pretty underwhelming outside of Barnett.

The injuries were the story last year. But I've wondered how much better the pash rush would have looked had the DB's been playing at SEC level. DL relies on DB's as much as DB's rely on DL. Regarding Clemson's DL, they've also had 4 DB's drafted the last 2 years to our 1 and I'm sure it's even more than that over the last 5. How many more sacks would Barnett have had if we switched secondaries with Clemson over the course of his career? Counting his time at Michigan, Wolfe at Cincy, and his time here, I bet he's put twice the players in the NFL than anyone else on Jone's staff.

Who else on Jones's staff has been better?

That's exactly why people loved him; Barnett. Take him away and what did we have?

Gillespie

I'd call that a push at best. I really like G and appreciate the job he's done, but Stripling has still put way more players in the league than G has to this point. They have easily been the top 2 position coaches on staff during Jones's tenure here for sure.

7 sacks for Vereen last year was pretty good. Tuttle was beasting out before injury. And he was clearly the most established coach on Jones's staff when he came here.

O'Brian was unstoppable last year before he was stupid

Strip did a pretty good job. Don't forget that we had 3 DTs in 2014: a converted DE, an unknown JUCO product, and a RS SO. He got them all up to speed. Helped Vickers become a factor. Just needed more talent and for his guys to stay healthier.

Am looking forward to Brady Hoke coaching the DTs up. I want to see a technique improvement across the board.

Agree. We need disruptive, playmaking DTs, not just space eaters that take on blocks for others. The best DTs do both....eat up blockers and still change the course of the game through penetration in the offensive backfield.

To be fair, Stripling coached 4 starters at a time while G coaches 1 at a time. I would hope he put more players in the league with that ratio

You or I could have put those numbers up when the other team had to check Barnett on the other side.

Pretty sure the ratio is more than 4:1, but that wasn't the point anyway. I didn't intend to downplay Gillespie's career while trying to rebut those downplaying Stripling's career. They've both been far and away the best coaches on Jones's staff. And saying that Stripling is only considered a good coach because of Barnett is rediculous.

That said, Jones being able to keep Strip on staff while also bringing Hoke on board was a great move. Hoke has recruited and/or eveloped a lot of DL in the NFL.
