'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

Wonder why kids get defensive about that? I guess DE is a more "glamorous" position but DT is a KEY position in big boy football and those guys get paid in the league.

I wouldn't call it more glamorous but that is what he's always played and that is where Tennessee's biggest need is. DE is a much bigger need than DT right now for UT, which is saying a lot because DT is always a need position for everyone.

Emerson staying at DE is ideal for recruiting and for our needs. That way we can take another DT to go with Lawless and Litaker, maybe two more.

I agree about our need at DE, we just always see guys resist moving to DT as if the position is beneath them. Not just Emerson, I see it a LOT, even from guys on campus. Like Kongbo, Phillips etc.

Anyway, I like Emerson at DE, and he along with Davis would be phenomenal.

Was just curious as to why guys like DE so much more than DT.

Maybe all I have to do to answer my own question is think back to when I played. I was OL and DT but I always wanted to play DE or LB.

I think it's because they are recruited to UT by the staff as Ends then they are suddenly moved out of the blue. This is one thing I hope changes now that Hoke is running things on the DL. I was never impressed with how the DE's have been handled or developed. And before people say Barnett, that guy was a beast the moment he stepped on campus. Trying to move Kongbo and Phillips to DT was idiotic IMO. They tried to do the same thing with Hendrix and it was a big reason why he left. All of them were recruited as DE's, hyped up by the staff and then they tried to move them all after the season started. They are going to need those two back at DE this year or we are in real trouble.

They kinda had to move them seeing as we had no DTs.

I think we need both those guys at DE too.

I'm not even arguing where player X needs to play or should play, just why guys get offended by the very thought of playing DT. Interested in the thought process.

I know what you are saying. DT is a money position for sure. I just think the guys at UT in particular have gotten offended because of how they were recruited coming out of HS/JUCO.

Tuttle's health was very uncertain, Alexis Johnson was up in the air. We were back to the "pair and a spare" at DT. There was clearly a need to look for some depth there.

I get that they had to be moved after the injuries, but they started messing with them at DT before any of those guys went down.

I thought they badly mismanaged things on the Dline last year prior to the injuries. Just little to no development among the DE's. Too much seniority, poor rotation opposite DB, etc.. How many times have they said Phillips needed to be on the field as much as possible at DE the last two seasons and he never was? I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I'm glad Hoke has replaced Stripling.

I mostly agree with you. I thought we really needed Taylors athleticism out there, especially in games like vs bammer when they were gashing us on the edge.

Speaking of that, I know this isn't the thread for it but.....

Vereen and Lewis crashed pretty much every play. Surely they weren't freelancing that much so seems it had to be by design, with the expectation that our LBs could contain the edge. But our LBs never could contain so I'm curious why we kept doing that over and over?? Am I missing something there?

And if we were telling our DEs to crash, we REALLY needed Taylor out there for his ability to change direction and limit QB runs.

How perfect would this instate DL haul be?

SDE: Emerson
DT: Lawless
DT: Litaker
WDE: Davis

Only Davis is not considered a Vol lean, and he may just be listening to the staff. The thought of such a haul gives me them feels.

Would be filthy. That would be a really huge DL, something we haven't had in awhile

Looks good to me. Hopefully Davis wakes up and realizes the mistake he made and picks the Vols.

Everyone thought Barnett would be a DT and we see how that turned out...but Emerson will have to show the same commitment DB did to keeping his weight down and his explosiveness at its peak

I thought Barnett would be a DT too, but if you believe their listed weights, Emerson is already quite a bit heavier than Barnett DB ever was.

Add Mustipher and we would really be cooking with gas.

Emerson is massive and really strong but judging by the pictures it looks like he has some bad weight he could get rid of.
