Firing a HC and his entire staff after an 8-4 season (albeit a very disappointing season), with wins against UF and UGA is not being a "realist"; it's a juvenile, knee-jerk reaction.
Nope. It is just a matter of looking at his "whole body of work".
We were told in year one that it was OK that the team played poorly, got blown out, and lost to a Vandy team with a bowl on the line because it was his first year and not his players.
In year two, the excuses were youth and depth with everyone pointing to years 3 and 4. UT lost at least one winnable game against a flat out horrible UF team.
Year 3, the meltdown losses primarily due to in game strategy have been well discussed. In a season where the Vols were probably a good gameday HC away from playing in the SEC CG.... they settled for 8-4. ALL Jones supporters pointed to year 4 as the break out year.
Year 4 was actually a worse performance than year 3. Yes there were wins over UF and UGA but the team didn't really play to potential at any point during the year. The USCe and Vandy losses are probably the two worst... and most meaningful of Jones' tenure.
Excuses? Plenty.
Injuries was a big excuse. But this isn't the first year that UT has had high injuries under Jones and he did NOTHING to change things in S&C. There was internal turmoil within a team that pretty obviously had an entitled view.
Jones has underperformed the talent on UT's roster in each of his 4 years. Year 4 was the WORST of all.
No realistic person denies he's done some good things or even thinks UT will fire him this year. But his job ultimately is to do all of those good things AND coach at a championship level. He hasn't. UT won't fire him. They probably wouldn't have even if Hart weren't leaving. But he's probably operating on borrowed time now.
My goodness, people act like UT has been averaging 10 wins a year with multiple SEC Championships for the past decade. This year was a major disappointment, but it was light years better then what we've seen the past decade.
So you lower the bar for Jones because UT has been bad? Jones' job isn't to be better than Dooley. His job is to win championships.
Now, if Butch goes 6-6 next year, then there should be a change.
If Jones wins anything less than 9 next year then there should be a change.... 8 without a doubt. Why? Because Jones has proven that he cannot beat teams with a little more talent on any sort of regular basis but HAS proven that he'll lose at least one game each year that he shouldn't lose. It is time for HIM to turn that around and beat a couple of teams he shouldn't WITHOUT losing to ones he should beat.
If he doesn't, his "body of work" will be more than sufficient to prove he is NOT a championship caliber coach.
