There is a lot of common sense talk in here...it doesn't have to be all positive to be common sense, and this is coming from someone who is usually very positive about TN football. However, after the debacle Saturday night, Butch has some things he needs to prove to some of us.
He had things to prove before the game Saturday. Even if he wins a NC here in a few years, he will still have things to prove because he could not at that point rest on his laurels. Some common sense in here for sure. But, some real crazy crap as well. Let him finish this season and then see where we are at. Let him finish the exam instead of grading it without even 20 percent of this season being done. With all the positives he has brought to a program in horrible shape, he deserves to get this year and two more with so he will have his first REAL recruiting class (one he had an entire year to recruit) to graduate. The best teams are a minimum of being two deep and some three deep. Having an incoming freshman in your two deep with walk on or even a very talented freshman such as Kirkland starting at MLB is not how you are one of the top teams in the country. That is where we want to be. Jones deserves to get there. Be critical of his in game decisions. I have been there since Vandy in 13 with several things. But, we have to give him the time or this program will be dead for a long time.
You may think a great in game coach could take these players he recruits and do great things but not if they can't sustain the recruiting. The greatest coaches who can do both right now would not come here if Jones were gone by the end of this year. Be careful what you ask for. You might get it and not like it. Just like the guy who owned a bedding company in Knoxville who lost it all when he went ALL IN with a young 20 something blonde instead of his present wife and he lost everything because he did not just marry the blonde once and get divorce but he remarried her and got divorced again.
Football and Women can be dangerous things. But, we love em.
...just like Warrior - did you hear this on the radio? I can't find anything on B/R where he says this and at least as of right now, the only CB to Tenn for Davis is Brad Shepard. If he was that confident, it looks like he would switch.
So I read on TOS that some of the late buzz is to Auburn so I asked my source. He says indeed Auburn is leading right now according to the information he has.
I'm feeling less and less optimistic.
Also, Nigel Warrior right now = not a Vol. Hope that changes.
It's amazing what one game can do to people's confidence. People from going chanting WRU to "we have no good wide receivers and why would any big time WR want to come here".
Next thing we know we will be running butch out of town for blowing a lead and losing by 7 points in 2 OT a year after losing by 24. Perspective people. It's never as good or as bad as it seems. Deep breath
When I returned to Knoxville following the 99 Fiesta Bowl NC Game, I heard a couple of them on Sports Talk calling for Fulmer to be fired, after he led the team to a perfect season and the first BCS NC. Their "reasoning" was that they didn't win a couple of games by a wide enough margin. Just goes to show that you literally can't please everyone.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of those people are the same ones calling for Butch's head now. They're probably (and ironically) some of the people that yearn for the Fulmer days on here.
Yeah, for someone like myself, who is heartbroken by Saturday's loss but generally optimistic about Butch and our future, this place has been kind of unbearable the last few days.
