Should've put him on a one year sabbatical to get his hunger back, shake off the complacency.

Let Chavis serve as interim coach for that year.

Phil Fulmer's an awesome head coach...he just needed a splash of cold water in the face to get back to it.

We were wrong to kick him to the curb, absolutely.

Fulmer wasn't hired after UT let him go. That tells you all you need to know about where Fulmer had gone in his working career as a college football coach. Love the guy! But it was time...passed time...

Could have been done more honorably I suppose instead of the cluster **** Hamilton created and chaos that ensued...

They could have let Fulmer take a breather and think personally about retirement verses yanking the rug out from under his feet....

But we don't know what happened behind the scenes.

Fulmer is extremely stubborn and bull-headed. He could have been a thorn in the side of powers that were??

We'll never know.....Fulmer did have this almost alter ego kind of reputation of being a certain way....i.e. the whole Majors/Fulmer Saga

Game passed him by? Run the ball, and play great defense. I think this is still what everyone wants to do.

You're out of your mind if you think nobody called him! He is a Tennessee boy. Spent his entire life here. His heart wouldn't let him go anywhere else!

Lol. He tried to insert himself into like 9 different coaching searches and no one was interested.

PF was the best unemployed HC out there for a long time. I thought someone would lay some major $$$$$$$$ on him to steer their program but it never happened.

Fulmer was a strong candidate for the University of Louisville head coaching job. He stated in many interviews that he was interested in the job and also had a phone interview with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich.

EVIDENCE!

He stated in many interviews and a book that he was interested in the job...but wasn’t even a finalist for the job. Hmmm

Anyone have regrets?

I will always appreciate all that CPF did for Tennessee. The man is a Tennessee Legend. However, it was time for him to move on IMO. Too bad Mike Hamilton was such a box of Summer's Eve....he should have been tarred & feathered for hiring Kiffin and Doofus!

You realize 2 of those coaches are top 5 all time right? They have like 9 NC's between them. Tommy should have one to. I mean it's hard to win against all-time greats!

Fulmer was an all-time great too, no? So why, among this group of all-time greats, was he the one that kept losing to the others?

Just because subsequent hirings have been botched doesn't mean Fulmer didn't deserve to be canned.

He was a perennial underachiever. Loads of squandered talent.

The program was a mess at the end of his tenure. The Fulmer Cup?? Players had zero respect for him. I was at UT then and knew a few. They did whatever they wanted and knew Phil (they actually called him that) wouldn't do anything about it

He had to go

It wouldn't have mattered, and Kiffin actually brought in higher-ranked players in a short time (it is questionable how much those rankings mattered of course). Fulmer's super-conservative nature and poor in-game management would have only taken us so far, even if we had true freshman studs starting. If you will remember, he started Mark Levine over the likes of Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry against Florida.

Kiffin’s recruiting class actually did more damage long term to the program more than Fulmer’s last few classes.

No!! (1) His recruiting was starting to get bad. (2) The hiring of Clawson as O.C. was a bad decision. He made that decision because no current O.C. would leave their job to come work for Fulmer. (3) His play calling was getting bad.

It was evident that the program was heading in the wrong direction and would continue to decline as long as he was the head coach.

the mistake that was made, was not hiring Cutcliff. He is not an exciting hire but the program would be in better shape now.....

Actually he hired Clawson because Phil’s buddy, AD at Boston College, interviewed Clawson for head coach and really impressed him. Fulmer asked a confidant about his idea on Clawson. So to say no other OC was coming is a flat out lie.

Secondly, Mike Debord (OC under Lloyd Carr at Michigan) was available due to Carr’s retirement and he would have brought Ryan Mallett with him.

Debord would have been the best hire Fulmer could have made.

Remember that his assistant John Currie went around saying pretty nasty things about CPF.

That gives me more faith in Currie. He's apparently more intelligent than the majority of this board, which remember:

1. Largely supported Dooley until he was fired
2. Largely supported Butch until like a month ago
3. Wanted to bring back Bruce Pearl
4. Wants Fulmer back

1. Some people support the coach until the end when all that was done was a lack of Ws and don't become whiny *****es over it.
2. See #1.
3. They were just loudmouths who wanted to be on their soapbox, just like the Empty Neyland fools.
4. There's a difference in thinking he shouldn't have been fired vs wanting him back.

The support I'm referring to isn't about wanting them to win. It's about making dumbass excuses for Dooley and Butch when they lose. There's not a single damn thing noble about that.
