'15 TN DE Kyle Phillips (UT commit 1/3/15)

Are you comparing our current situation to Auburn's just coming off a NC appearance? Maybe you shouldn't do that first before reading the post.

I'm just unsure what point you are trying to make. An 8-4 season is nothing to laugh at from our perspective.

I think it's the whole regression thing. It's likely we look better this year, so maybe that's what he's saying.

I guess but I don't see 8-4 being that big of a deal in a recruits mind. Maybe if they went 4-8 after being in the NC game last year...

If we both go 8-4 we will see a huge difference in recruits minds. Perception would definitely be in our favor then.

For us, definitely. For Auburn...I don't see the perception changing too much because of one 8-4 season.

Sorry, on the road and couldn't reply. I would be thrilled to go 8-4 this year as a UT fan.

However, Auburn, went to a NC with a new head coach nonetheless. It was a complete fluke season, one of the craziest in college football history. I think a lot of these commits have bought into the Malzahn hype, when he could have very easily went 8-4 last year and been an afterthought. Unless Malzahn has a genie in his pocket, reality should set in with a 3-4 loss season. I think that will cool the jets with all the hype, which as CWG said "close the perception gap."

Now, all of that could be thrown out the window if Phillips has a family/friend connection to Auburn, which I'm not aware of.

Really not fluke seeing the players were actually recruited for his system. He just came back and brought the system with him. Gus is a winner and will do big things at Auburn especially when he gets a real QB....

You buying the hype to BB? :)

Five of their wins last year literally changed by one play, and 3 of those were just flat flukish.

WSU 31-24
MSU 24-20
OM 30-22
UGA 43-38
Bama 34-28

Sure, championship runs take those kind of plays to happen(Stoerner fumble), but I can assure you that stuff doesn't fly consecutive years in the SEC. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Malzahn's teams are going to tank now, but they will come back down to earth.

edit - interesting you don't think Marshall is a good QB for his system

Gus has had all different kinds of QBs. His system is not as run heavy as they were last year, he's just a genius when it comes to adapting his system to his players. He threw it all over the place at Tulsa.

I agree, he can adapt to his personnel.

That's what makes him a good coach.Takes what talent he has and adapts to them not the other way around.I personally think hes one of the top 2 or 3 offensive minds in college football today.I still can't stand AU and think other than the U they are the dirtiest program in CF.

I have not said anything one way or another on where he will commit. I just said we are in great shape with him. And I know he gets pressure from my grandfather and I. I have expressed to him about the class filling up. And I just wanted to share it here. It does not mean he will commit to UT. But I want him at UT.--He knows this.

TNllaw44er could you hook us up with an update?
