'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

lol MLB scares me, going to be rough this yr, especially after getting the AJ treatment for 3 solid years.

ive got some questions going forward. will Bates move back to the outside next yr where he seems a more natural fit? does Bynum have the speed to hold down the position at this level? Will Bryant have his coming out party this year or will he stay in the doghouse?

Kirkland is the bright flame in that line up and I am hesitant to get excited about a freshman coming off an injury

We get Hart next year who is an unknown and Bituli seems poised to play a role similar to Maggitt

MLB is going to be one of our biggest weaknesses on defense, by far

Well you managed to shoot down every option. If you're bound and determined to be anxious... :wavey:

If you think Hart is an unknown you don't keep up with Tennessee HS football. This guy has been a tackling machine since he was a soph and plays against very good competition. Ole Miss and LSU had been after him hard since his soph year.

Exactly. Anyone who acts like they weren't excited almost 2 years ago when a FL kid with UF and Bama offers picked us then they're lying. Now, we can say we upgraded and we likely did but no recruitnik questioned the initial take.

I didn't...I heard plenty of second guessers tho. :)

My understanding at the time Cherry decommitted was that our coaches had suggested it because they had decided on other priorities and there was no room for him. I guess I heard wrong.

the truth is, these things aren't revealed unless its by someone close to the program or by the kid themselves. even guys like Hubbs or Callahan wont share that information as its divulging into the recruit's personal life.

I would not be surprised if our coaches told him to take a hike because they found someone better; it is the nature of the game if you want to be the best you have to recruit with the best and sometimes that means using questionable recruiting tactics

i would say the same about any incoming inside linebacker that isn't on campus

didn't mean much else by it

Funneeeeee.....there's NOTHING questionable about wanting to sign the BEST talent available out there...and EVERY coach in D-1 will tell you that they keep recruiting all the way and past signing day--because, 18 year old kids do change their minds at the last minute.

The gate swings both ways in recruiting--and EVERYONE in the business KNOWS it.....:salute:

He initially committed to tennessee before he made his pledge to texas in december.

His father made it clear he did not want him to back out on the volunteers in the first place, and he felt strongly that signing with texas was a mistake.

"tennessee was a perfect fit for him," winston cherry said. "texas wasn't the right place for him to go. I knew this wasn't going to last, because the simple fact is this wasn't put together right. It was just a matter of time."

The more I read about this, the more bizarre it gets. Cecil was practicing as the No. 2 MLB immediately after stepping on campus. He would have been no worse than the No. 3 this fall. How pissed could he really have been over a number?

Again. This is on Cherry. We were telling Kirkland that the numbers wouldn't work until Cherry decided to OV Texas. That was suggested by insiders before Cherry used an OV; it was pretty much confirmed by comments from Kirkland which I quoted earlier. I'm not saying Jones doesn't use "questionable" tactics like every other coach in college football but in this instance nothing the staff did was wrong. You're not committed if you're still playing the field.

Dalton Santos was out with an ankle injury, when he came back Cecil would be #3.

From the outside looking in, most recruits are just names and faces to us. However, there are some who get bent out of shape over very odd things. It wouldn't be the first time a players chose of a school hinged on being promised their preferred number.

Happens more than you would believe.

Figured he'd be playing nose by now.

Even the players Dooley lost weren't that good. Santos is 2nd string going into his senior year. A lot of VNers (myself included) freaked out when we lost him.

Peters (Dooley's other big miss at LB that year) has transferred from Arkansas to La Lafayette.

Sounds like Otha got Cajun-girled, too.
