'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

Kirkland happened. Major upgrade who is much more versatile and faster.

This. Which is fine by me. Cecil was a good LB, but Kirkland is much better.

The thing that bothers me about this is how gung-ho about being a "VFL" and now he's a turncoat. It's just more proof that you can't put any stock into an 18-year-old's "commitment" until the ink is dry in February. Best of luck to him, until we end up playing him in a bowl (maybe). :)

Thigpen flat out told Cecil that he would lose his spot if started taking visits. I guess Cecil thought he was bluffing or too good to lose a spot.

Thig probably knew he had Kirkland as his ace in the hole too.

This will probably get merged I guess, but the story of what happened looks to already been discussed on the recruiting forum.

It has been, but, sifting thru the minutiae there (recruiting forum) can be just as bad a sifting thru the minutiae here (football forum) when looking for answers.

You gotta love the name though....cecil cherry! Just sounds like a LB. Oh well if you arent with us your against us

Brent Hubbs, with more inside sources to the program than arguably anyone, has said as much. He specifically said that the coaches told Kirkland there was no spot available.

Cherry visits Texas, and all of the sudden, a spot is available. Imagine that, right? If you have evidence to suggest that Hubbs or anyone else with inside knowledge of the situation is wrong, please share. Otherwise, don't attack people who are regurgitating information that you didn't take the time to read.

Actually Kirkland himself said the staff told him they couldn't make the numbers work at the time.

"About a month ago, we had been talking for a long time, but about a month and a half ago I reached out to them and let them know about my situation and they were very excited about it but numbers-wise it just wasn't working out," Kirkland Jr. explained. "But, after a couple of weeks went by and they figured some things out they are excited about me and want me to be a Vol."

And then there is this one from PFort:
From what I understand Tennessee has basically decided to part ways with Cherry after his recent visit to Texas. Obviously, they weren't happy about him taking a visit and being open after they basically stopped recruiting MLBs because Cherry had been committed for so long.

Kirkland is rated higher, but this still sucks. I watch there highlight videos back to back and I just don't see that nasty mean streak in Kirkland like I do in cherry. Cherry really lays the wood.

Also from what I'm getting on google we are third behind Michigan and ole miss for Kirkland. If we want him something better happen.

He made his own bed. Doesn't mean he's not a good player. Whoever lands him is getting a headhunter

Seen where several have posted that Kirkland is an upgrade. I have watched highlights on both of them, and they both are impressive at their position. They are in High School and who really know which one will turn out to be better? I was very excited the first time I saw Cherry's highlights, and just as impressed about wanting this to be his home and did nothing but talk Vols. Why would he dare look anywhere else? What really happened? He was all in, more to this than Kirkland. Why would any kid commit and say I'm all Vol and take a visit anywhere else. Go see all you can before you say COMMITED!

that's true but Kirkland moves better IMO and most of the offenses now in the sec are more spread types so we need speed everywhere on the field.

LOL. I could make a pretty good educated guess but people would just lose their chit. Strong has ties to Florida still.

It's just kind of funny. Lol.

Cherry is going to be such a beast. We are set for the next few years with what we are going to have on defense the next few years.

*Cherry is not coming after all*

Meh he wasn't that good anyway. A little slow.

Pretty much

I have thought Cherry was a bit under size for the mike LB, and with the emergence of Jakob Johnson maybe this help with the time need to build this Defense from the ground up.

But it is crazy how good the D is going to be next year.

And with the Offense trending now, UT is going to be fun to watch.

So the obvious answer is he wasn't as good as we (myself included) built him up to be and he's not as bad as many are now proclaiming him to be.

I'll take Kirkland and be thrilled. Looks like Cherry and Tennessee are going through a nasty divorce.

Kids gonna regret it. Good thing is that he will not decide until Feb 5 . Which tells me he is blowing smoke or just not that sure he wants to go to Texas. That's the problem with riding wave, could lose out big time.

I personally have always had worries about Cherry's speed.... I just wasn't going to run down a commit. Now that the staff has cut ties, I don't mind talking about it. I'm sure that's the case with a lot on here. Might not be the same people who were talking about how great he was going to be....I know I wasn't. I'm sure there are a few though.
