'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

A tweet I saw in the "tweets forum" was a reply from Cherry to a fan that told him to stay in the SEC and be a Vol and Cherry's response was something to the effect of "naw, you guys go after your other linebacker".

Definitely sounds jilted.

Here's the actual exchange:

A fan to Cecil:
The_Vol_Nation (@The_Vol_Nation)
@cecil__cherry3 You do know the #Big12 is pretty meaningless in the college football world right? Stick with #SEC & ur commitment to #Vols

Cecil's response:

Cecil Cherry (@cecil__cherry3)
@The_Vol_Nation nawl I'm straight go get that other linebacker

So the obvious answer is he wasn't as good as we (myself included) built him up to be and he's not as bad as many are now proclaiming him to be.

I'll take Kirkland and be thrilled. Looks like Cherry and Tennessee are going through a nasty divorce.

I think it is more a case of Cherry and a portion of the UT fanbase are going through a nasty divorce. I think Tennessee has already moved on.

Unfortunately it appears he was told to look around. I really can't say I like this kind of recruiting, but the staff is trying to get the best players.

Not to go all LV, but he decided to take a visit, why shouldn't we tell a kid the consequences of the action and then follow through? It's been pretty well documented that his spot would have been secure had he not visited Texas.

This is all a part of the business. Same as interviewing for a job. You can't expect to be the guy every time.

He had more camps, lost ground, other guys did the opposite. He said he was committed but started shopping other schools, we said we were committed but kept an eye on other prospects.

Nature of the game. Ive heard of a lot worse situations for these young athletes than this one. I want this staff to be able to make the hard decisions and get us the best players possible, regardless of what it takes. (within the rules, obviously)

It's just kind of funny. Lol.

Cherry is going to be such a beast. We are set for the next few years with what we are going to have on defense the next few years.

*Cherry is not coming after all*

Meh he wasn't that good anyway. A little slow.

That's the VN way. He was the next Al Wilson and now he isn't really that good. Pretty sad

Yes. All of Vol nation is a single poster.

This! I don't know why people keep saying this and think it's "sad" and crazy. When he was a commit a few questioned his ability, some didn't as to not bash a recruit. Which is what we ask everyone to do, right? Then when he's no longer committed OTHER posters come out and speak their mind on questions they had. Some people are acting like droves of posters have posted positive comments when he was committed and are now posting negative ones about his ability. That's simply not the case. Not really that hard.

I think it's very simple and reasonable recruiting. You stick with your commitment, you're safe. You wanna "enjoy the process" after committing, you're on the chopping block.

Cherry took a visit, take Kirkland.
Jackson/Taylor takes visits, take Phillips.
Miller takes visits, take Amadi.
Reid takes visits, take Vaughn/Love.

Kid wants to be a Vol, don't give the coaches a reason to replace you. Simple as that. JMO

And some won't have to take a visit to be replaced. However they may be told to take a visit too.

At least at this point, that does not seem to be taking place this class. Most have long mentioned several guys who would be dropped. Yet those guys all seem to be right where they need to be to sign with our Vols. We'll see how it plays out.

Had someone mentioned 3 months ago that Cherry would be dropped to sign Kirkland most would have swore that that was BS and CBJ would just take both. "They will make room" is always the fall back. Obviously that's not the case.

We had a lot more de-commits last class and most of them before Dec. This class has played out different. Woods was one, and that was on him and his issues. Cherry for taking visits. That's it. I think current commits who are not taking trips are safer than most fans I guess.
