Backup MLB right now if I recall correctly...
With JJ being the first one in at MLB in mop up duty I'd say he would have the first shot in the middle next year. With CM, CW and JRM coming back we should be pretty stout at LB. AJJ has been about as good as any LB in the country so losing his play and leadership will hurt but we should be ok.
I think Jakob at MLB would be good, although I don't know if that is where he will finish his career. That's a tough position to pick up, especially if the coaches expect Jakob to be the defensive general a la A.J. Jakob would have to spend a lot of time in the film room and quickly if he is to play MLB next year. I wouldn't be shocked if JRM plays in the middle next year.
Either way, I don't think there is another linebacker who I'd rather see replace A.J. Jakob is an intimidating figure in the middle when he plays in mop up duty.
Haven't thought about JRM playing in the middle. That could work, seems like a smart kid. I'd hate to lose him on the outside in pass coverage though. He matches up well with TEs, RBs and slots. I'm sure coach will put the guys in best position for the team. There are a lot of options though.
Is there anything that says the MLB has to be the general of the defense? Honest question. Could you not run Jakob (or Cherry, or Bryant... whoever is ready) at MLB but have JRM direct the defense from the Will?
He could but Rocky Top Insider has said Bynum has been making strides.
Bynum
Maggitt
Reeves-Maybin
Bates
Bryant
Cherry
Weatherd
Berry
McDowell
Plenty of options at LB in '15
