'15 FL QB/WR/DB (anything he wants) Torrance Gibson

I can understand why he feels that way. At all the camps hes been to, he has had trouble throwing the ball and moved to WR. If you watch his highlight film, about 75% of the plays are him running the ball. And a large percentage of his passes were screens. Since we have had sub par QB play, you want to make sure you get someone who has a great and consistent arm. Gibson is more of a threat with his feet. His completion % was just over 50% and it seems like most were screens. Hes a great athlete and I hope we get him, but I can see the concern

Sure, Gibson has had some trouble at camps throwing the football. I won't dispute that.

Gentry looks to be on paper a much more prolific passing QB than Gibson.

However, it is still absolutely ridiculous to infer that UT would not want or accept Gibson's commitment and want him to go elsewhere. And that was the original comment I replied to.

We will just have to agree to disagree cause a high school player that can throw the ball that deep down the field on the run does has good arm strength throwing on the run is all arm strength. I've seen Gibson reverse the field twice reset is feet and hit a hell of a bomb. I just think he is far better. Gibson looks a lot like Bridgewater coming out of HS same throwing ability and Gibson is a better athlete. Go look at Bridgewater's tape.

Gentry is not even an athlete of Dobbs and Ferguson's level they even played tougher competition. Gentry looks like he runs a 4.9 and everyone else is running sub 5 40 times. I just see Gentry being a good College QB not doubt but as a game manager at the next level. He won't loose you any game but he won't win you any either.

Its easier to throw on the run. Try it out in your backyard. Throw one pass standing and one pass on the run. Your forward velocity can help increase the force on a football.

It's difficult for me to fathom a UT football fan stating that they hope one of the most talented, sought after QB/ATH in the nation signs elsewhere.

Especially considering the sub-par QB play UT has had the last 5+ seasons.

They hear one report of him struggling in camp and they think they are QB experts. Also ignoring the fact he is one of the best athletes in the nation.

I wasnt really directing it toward you. I was just saying I can understand why some people are cautious about taking him

I'll take either Gibson or Gentry, whoever jumps on board first, without hesitation. Even if neither of them turn out to be that great, you still have Jennings, a slew of young QBs ahead on the depth chart already, and the possibility of recruiting another franchise QB in '16. If Gibson tells us he wants to commit first I think we'd be ill advised to hold out for Gentry.

I've seen a gunslinger type at Tennessee recently, and not that it's a bad thing, I just want a true dual threat QB for a change. Would love for either to commit, but if I had to choose, I'd take Gibson

So I guess if someone is a great athlete that automatically makes them a great QB. Good to know.

So if someone has a great arm that automatically makes them a great QB?

He can develop. If he doesn't then he doesn't have to play qb. It's difficult for me to fathom how a UT football fan cannot notice by looking at film that Gibson is an excellent athlete.

I do think he could be a successful SEC qb. Nick Marshall is a horrible passer and almost won a national championship.

My biggest knock on Gibson is his timeline. Like most teams, we need our QB to commit early and start recruiting. Early for most QBs is before their senior season. Early for Gibson is a few weeks before NSD. Most teams will have their QB by then.

I agree, would love for Gibson to be a VOL but I think getting a QB early is big deal to help with recruiting.

vs weak competition
top 300 player
160/286 56% 1587 yds 9.9 ypc 9tds 3ints
121 617 yds 5.1 ypc 16 rushing tds

Vs the best in the nation
top 15 player
85/153 56% 1789 yds 21 ypc 19tds 3ints
111 1063 yds 9.6 ypc 10 ruching tds

And TG doesn't have Florida level athletes catching passes, blocking and running FOR him?

Yep... As will we...

Watch the film. 3/4 of Gibson's passes are screens.

I don't care. I'm watching an elite player making other elite players look foolish on a football field. I have nothing against Gentry but I would light up New Mexico competition.

Camps are ok but in 11 vs 11 tackle football against D1 talent every game this young man is the best player on the field. Give me that.

You must also consider that level of competition in high school cannot be used to measure success at the college level. If it could then every 5* player that plays against strong competition would pan out. They don't. As a passer Gibson needs work. Yes he can develop. If CBJ thinks Gibson is the best fit for our offense then I am all for it.

Gibson is the better athlete? You got it.

Its difficult for me to fathom that no one else can fathom the possibility of Gentry going elsewhere. Ill take either one or both. Im not gonna whine over getting either.

Yeah that's my biggest concern with Gibson.. I don't like that he's waiting that long to commit at all.. We can't afford that being in the situation we r in. Getting Jennings first would be a little insurance tho.

I really don't see how Auburn's current QB compares to Gibson being in Butch's offense. Other than being spreads, Mahlzahn's system is significantly different than Butch's. The point probably is that Gibson might be better in Auburn's offense than Tennessee's. Butch's offense actually works better as a pass first, run second with the QB. The runs are to keep the D honest and inflict some damage on them if they are not.

That's not to say that Gibson cannot be developed into Butch's style. Butch offered him so he believes he can. That's all I need to know. As far as level of competition goes in HS - that is fine to consider it. But it is well down the list when it comes to QBs.

I brought up the screen passes because you brought up the numbers. Screen passes are easy completions, so they ramp up the completion percentages. I never said he wasnt elite.

Heres an example of what I meant.

He was 85/153. If he threw 75 screen passes and completed 75% of them, that would mean 56 of the 85 completions were screens. That would mean he went 29/78 which is about 37%. Now this is just an example of how his stats could actually be without screens. I dont know if he actually threw 75 screens. But in his film he threw a lot.

Now once again I will say, I would love to have him, but I see why people are concerned. He is an elite athlete

Gibson will be a superstar somewhere on the field even if it's not at QB(even tho I think he will do fine there)

Gentry is a qb or bust
