K-town, if you understood recruiting and why players commit, you would know.

Coaches only have so many players that they can sign. With all of our needs and the smallish number of current open slots, Butch can not afford to sign 3 QBs. Not to mention, it is pretty obvious from Dormady's statements that he was informed that when he committed, that he will be the only other QB signed in this class by UT. Butch can not comment on players or anything that refers to hem himself, but the players can speak and Dormady has.

Butch is still recruiting and wants TG, however, you be sure that it will be as a WR.Otherwise he likely loses Dormady and Butch wants his pro-stykle QB to run his pro-style passing attack, manned by a line of future first round playmaking WRs.

You're not a D1 coach. You're not on CBJ staff. You have absolutely no idea what CBJ can and cannot afford. You don't know how many players he will sign. You don't know that he doesn't want 3 QBs. You pretend to know more about recruiting than other people and you don't. You don't know how good of a passer TG can become. You don't know anything about his work ethic or anything else. As a matter of fact you know as much as the rest of us about TG and that's very little.

You have failed to provide any proof that we want him at any other position than QB. There is no film of him playing WR. The only indication of him playing WR is the few times he did it at a few camps for fun. If recruits can talk without getting in trouble then why hasn't TG said CBJ has talked about putting him at WR? Seems to me there would be no problem in doing that.

It is really very simple. We planned to take 2 QB's no matter what. Riley left which meant we were one down so now we need 3. JJ is committed with a promise to get a try at QB but is basically an ATH. QD commits and is a QB. Since Riley left we now have room for Gibson as well. We can say we are taking him as an ATH and that will not scare QD away since technically he is the only true QB recruit. JJ and TG will get their try at QB and one or both will possibly move to other positions. That will leave us with 1 QB for this class and maybe one more which is what was planned to begin with. Since one will likely move to another position we still have room for at least one QB in 2016. I do not buy in that it will take 2 years or so for both to seek out another position. How long did it take Charlie High to see he had little chance of starting at Tennessee and transfer? True he was a walk-on , but he was promised a shot like the rest. Once all 3 are there the cream will rise to the top and the coaches will heavily encourage whoever is on the bottom to transfer or seek another position. This is not rocket science and it would be crazy to not take TG or give him a shot at QB. Fergy leaving is what makes this whole scenario all to real. Whether you like it or not taking 3 at this point is no different then what we initially planned since Riley left. May the gnashing of teeth begin.

Excellent post. I really don't understand why people cannot understand this.

No, but I am a former collegiate player, who has been through the recruiting process with myself and other members of my family. I know how the coaches work, what they say, what they promise, why they say what they say, how the commitment process works, and what happens when they are not truthful.

Very little of that has changed in the recruiting game other than the players. It is the same process, teams have the same needs, coaches use the same promises, and coaches use the same things for leverage and security in putting their recruiting classes together.

You ask me for proof. Please, feel free to provide some of your own to back up your stance on the other side. My stance is based on past experiences and the familiarity with the process. Yours is based on pure emotion.

Ok i'll bite. Your previous experience as a recruit means very little. A recruit and a coach are polar opposites. As a player all you had to do is worry about committing. Coaches have to worry about many more things. This still doesn't qualify you to know what the coaches are thinking or how they are going to work out this recruiting class.

So what happens if coaches are untruthful? Do you honestly believe that coaches never break their promises?

I have repeatedly asked you for proof and you have provided none. You obviously are very unfamiliar with the burden of proof and I don't feel like explaining it to you. My proof? Ok. Gibson played QB exclusively last year at his high school. His 247 profile states he is a DT QB Torrance Gibson. I have read several different places that UT is recruiting him as a QB. What I haven't read is UT recruiting him as a WR. Now seeings how he played WR for fun at a couple of camps means very little. Basically everything we have heard about Gibson and Tennessee points to him playing QB here. Why is that hard for you to understand?

What do all of these articles have in common? They all mention Gibson as a QB and not a WR. If this doesn't end the discussion for you then I don't know what will.

However I will say this. If we land Gibson and he doesn't work out at QB and CBJ moves him to WR then I am fine with it. Until that happens all info points to Gibson coming here as a QB.

Also my stance is based on available facts and nothing else.

There is one problem with this. The 25 Initial Counters number. Since Swafford was put on scholarship, the number for the 2015 class has been a hard 24. We can't go over that and it is very doubtful that we will go under it. Riley leaving does not give us any additional room to take a QB.

Butch Jones has 2 (maybe 3) "Best Available" slots in this recruiting class. If Gibson were to be signed, it would most likely be as one of the "BA" slots. Considering he is an elite player with versatility, I would guess that he is pretty high up the list.

I would say the class of 24 looks something like this. It can obviously change based upon how the 2014 roster and 2014 recruiting class shake out.

2 QB (0 remaining)
2 RB (1 remaining)
4 OL (2 remaining)
2 WR (1 remaining, assuming no Woods)
3 DE (1 remaining, assuming Jackson is a DE)
2 DT (2 remaining)
2 LB (1 remaining)
2 CB (2 remaining)
1 S (0 remaining)
1 Specialist (0 remaining)
3 Best Available (3 remaining)

We cannot go above that 24 number. I would expect one of those "Best Available" slots to be reserved for an OL/DL.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

If they lose a QB competition, and then get mad and refuse to play another position and want to transfer - good. That frees up a 'ship that would have been wasted on a kid that would sit the bench.

The objective is to find the best players, not just to keep 'ships filled up.

I have no idea who would win a 3-way QB competition between JJ, TG, and QD, but if any of them lose it and want to transfer away - go right ahead.

Good post.

Looks similar to mine except I had 3 OL instead of 4 and your counting on (3) extra "Best Available". Mine figured on 4 more leaving, and yours figures on 8 more.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
