'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Yeah. Corner is really high in Gaulden. He believes he's the best DB in the state. Better than TKjr even.

I think he's a really good player/athlete. He's a different type of safety than TKj but he's not as talented IMO. And that's in no way a slight either because he's a great prospect but I think TKj is elite.

No need to accost a new poster for suggesting someone might play lb someday. It's not douchewarrior you're corresponding with, it's a fellow Vol

Pretty different players. TK is definitely better in run support, but Gaulden seems to have great coverage. FS/SS combo, or is Gaulden going to play CB?

That's exactly how I feel. And no I think Gaulden is a more of a FS but I think in our new defense the safeties are going to play similar roles and be almost interchangeable (not completely but almost).

Agreed. I don't think he's a LB but there's no reason to knock someone for suggesting it.

Whatever you wanna think dude, I got plenty of papers, reviews, and awards to tell me I'm plenty intelligent. You know, just in case I start to feel insecure. I feel confident in my opinion. I may be wrong, I may be right, I never stated it as fact. It's my evaluation. If you agree or not makes no difference to me. I just put an option out there that could POSSIBLY happen.

Still got that 1st place ribbon in tug of war from elementary school I see.

Thought we'll actually have a FS and SS. But as for Gaulden he's a good safety prospect but a D.Miliner type of athlete at CB. Big fast strong physical player at CB.

Wow, lots of butthurt over my comment. I state an opinion and all of a sudden I'm a Vandy troll XD I hate Vandy. Almost as much as I hate Florida. People should read profiles before they go spouting off insults. Gaulden is an extremely instinctive player. I made my comment AFTER watching ALL his film, like an educated person would, and then remarked that I think he's just a little slow at the CB position. A good CB, in my eyes, needs to run at least a 4.5. Gaulden has great burst after the 3rd step or so. So you could say he has nickelback range. I've seen some fast people in my day, but Gaulden is just above average from his film. That's my opinion. Not every recruit in the class is a day one superstar like an Adoree Jackson, CP, or Jalen Hurd. We are taking a TON of Defensive Back's this class, and someone is going to get sat a while and someone is going to get their position changed for playing time. Fact of life. Gaulden is an extremely talented athlete who I want at UT and who deserves to see the field, I just think he looks like a better fit bulked up at OLB. We are talking about a player going into his senior year already at 185. It isn't implausible to put him at OLB or NB, unless you want to see long Touchdowns on the outside for a few more years. Stop bashing and take a seat back down people.

Btw we aren't exactly loaded at OLB.

Anybody can see that Gaulden takes false steps. Easily coached up and nothing to polish off for a DB Coach the caliber of Martinez. Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman aren't speedsters at CB but they are physical and highly skilled. This kid also has decent recovery speed. And that's 10th Grade film we were watching. I also want to know when does 185lbs lead to LB weight? Put 20lbs on him and he's 205lbs. Small LB but an ideal safety weight wise.

You may be right about that I thought I had read that the coaches wanted the safeties to be interchangeable but I may have my story mixed up. I just see Gaulden as a FS personally but if he has the ability then I'd love to have him at CB.

I get the speed vs technique side of the position, and his recovery isn't bad, your right, but to survive as a CB in our conference or beyond, if you are going to rely on technique over speed you need to have great recovery time. His instincts are top notch when it comes to tracking the ball carrier, even in a scramble, and he is indeed a very physical back. I, however, do not see him beating out TKJR and McNeil at safety, which I agree is the better fit for Gaulden at the back end of the defense. By the time those players leave, he could very easily be recruited over by faster, more athletic players in the next three classes, and he won't play beyond a back up role at a safety position for three years.

To address the LB weight, he's weighing in at 180 his soph year and at least 185 his junior year. Your right, by the time he gets on campus, he might be looking at 205 already. With that kind of backed up situation, I could just as easily see us taking too few LB this class, and redshirting Gaulden and putting him at WILL weighing at 215. He drops from what looks like a 4.54, 4.55, to maybe a 4.64 and he STILL is fast for a OLB. Takes advantage of his instincts, and puts an extremely athletic player with coverage skills and a physical nature at a position of need.

McNeil and TK are both more of a SS. Gaulden would be a better FS than either IMO.

More logic....that's bout all we gonna have of that.

More from corner (Buck) today...

"Good points on different types of Safeties. NYC asked about comparing Gaulden to G Wilson. I think Kelly is more like Wilson. Better in the box, probably going to better on run fits, smart and rugged. Has good ball skills. Gaulden is a much better cover guy. He is also going to be the better guy in pass coverage because he has great ball skills. In fact he could be an very good SEC WR. I think Gaulden plays with more violence, Kelly more under control. Kelly will make less mistakes/a little more reliable, Gaulden more explosive plays. Gaulden plays against much better competition. Both very good players. "

Love this! Much needed form our DB's and "D" in general. And it sounds like he's more of a risk taker by comparison.

A lot of the stuff Jancek runs looks like what they were running at the red-helmet school (Brentwood?). If figured he could just slide right in and pick up things very quickly. Seems like they have to be wanting this guy to play S with his speed and size. I don’t know if any of you know this, but a play-making safety is a bit of a rarity these days. If you can get one, get one.

I'd love to have to athletic and hard-nosed Tennessee boys playing next to each other at the safety positions. TKj and Gaulden needs to be a reality! That's a dirty combo right there.

Going to be on EA's show between 1-3. Odds that he pulls the trigger today? I say 110% based solely on the desire to add his brick to the pile!
