'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Said hospitality really stood out to him. Talks to Coach Thigpen every week. Really wants to play in the SEC. Tennessee is recruiting him as a CB/Nickel. Said he really doesn't have any other visits right now. Looking forward to playing Jalen Hurd and Beech this year. May close recruiting soon, no date, but want to close before or at beginning of the season.

I get the speed vs technique side of the position, and his recovery isn't bad, your right, but to survive as a CB in our conference or beyond, if you are going to rely on technique over speed you need to have great recovery time. His instincts are top notch when it comes to tracking the ball carrier, even in a scramble, and he is indeed a very physical back. I, however, do not see him beating out TKJR and McNeil at safety, which I agree is the better fit for Gaulden at the back end of the defense. By the time those players leave, he could very easily be recruited over by faster, more athletic players in the next three classes, and he won't play beyond a back up role at a safety position for three years.

To address the LB weight, he's weighing in at 180 his soph year and at least 185 his junior year. Your right, by the time he gets on campus, he might be looking at 205 already. With that kind of backed up situation, I could just as easily see us taking too few LB this class, and redshirting Gaulden and putting him at WILL weighing at 215. He drops from what looks like a 4.54, 4.55, to maybe a 4.64 and he STILL is fast for a OLB. Takes advantage of his instincts, and puts an extremely athletic player with coverage skills and a physical nature at a position of need.

I can tell you D.Miliner looked the same in HS. He didn't even like to tackle. Dre Kirkpatrick is nowhere near as good of an athlete as Gaulden and they survived in this league. I really would expect Gaulden to clock in the 4.4 range. His recovery speed is too good not to be able to drop his "timed speed".

I was not expecting the boundary corner thing. But that seems to be what they are doing with the swift safeties these days. And that also goes back to why finding playmaking safeties are so rare nowadays.

Rashaan Gaulden talked w/ me & @VolRumorMill today. Said he's being recruited as a corner/@vwharton3 isn't pressuring him to come to UT

He doesn't have to pressure him. He knows that he's gonna be a vol.

The 40 time is really the main point of contention here. I don't have a real time to go by, and the eye tells me he is about as fast as Z-Ro, so like a 4.55, in the range. If he is in the 4.4 range, by all means, hook him up at CB (nickel would be my opinion). I just don't see him running that fast. I think his instincts make him look a lot faster because his angles are always impeccable.

I'm personally an Adoree Jackson-type CB fan. Fast and super-athletic, and a work ethic to boot. Speed kills out there on the edges. Gaulden definitely fits the Miliner-mold.

I try and see all the points of view. I guess suggesting not-so-obvious paths makes me an idiot to some people. Oh well.

40 times are kinda funny depending on the athlete. Gaulden could have certain factors limiting his 40 time. His on the field game speed is very fast. A guy like Dre Kirkpatrick ran a 4.4 but has no recovery speed. Gaulden isn't the slow athlete.

Recruitings starting to shake up a little bit for me really thinking things through and letting God work! #verytoughdecision

Don't like what's going on with some of our thought to be soon committing recruits. Gaulden needs to be a vol.
