'14 F VA Jabari McGhee (UT commit 5/2/14)

I don't understand everyone's excitement. We beat out Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky. Are those really the schools we want to be poaching from that will "lead this team" into relevance?

While I think McGhee will turn out to be a pretty decent player, there definitely appears to be a double standard going on. This guy compares to Derek Reese in terms of offer list, but is being talked about as if he's a top 150 guy.

Of the players that are left on the board, he's one of the better ones.

I disagree, I can name 20 that are higher rated. Once again, that's not to say he's not gonna be good, but with all these guys getting releases there's a lot better available talent.

He's much lower rated than some of our previous commits.

That being said, I think he's a good player and will be a solid contributer eventually and possibly next year.

Just don't understand the bashing of the kids we previously had committed who were rated much higher and the widespread acceptance of this kid being a quality pick up. I understand CDT is limited in who is available, but come on guys.

Well said IMO

Soo many people failing to realize basketball signing starts in November 70% of the best talent is signed by now!! This late in the game this is a good pickup regardless of offer list.. So people better off with mouths closed than some of this bull im reading

The answer most likely lies in the current program leadership vs the former. If Tyndall is bringing this type kid in three years from now, and has little postseason success to show for it, the natives will be restless. He gets a pass this late in the game of year 1.

Did people criticize him reaching on guys in year 1 though, and criticize the fact that we wasted multiple scholarships?

Tyndall said he would avoid doing that very thing.

you should be coaching then if youre such an awesome basketball mind.

Sir this is a discussion thread, I am merely stating a point. You are just throwing jabs with zero facts to back it up. I mean are you arguing the fact 6'6 players are constantly playing power forward for big time basketball programs?

Look I am thrilled we finally got a recruit. HOWEVER, if we weren't going to be able to keep the class we had put together before CDT then why should I be thrilled about players who project to have a lower ceiling then ones we had already locked up? Right, Tyndall needs to get his system in his guys, Athleticism is huge and I hope this guy carries over from playing the 5'9 scrubs in his district to posturizing Billy D's boys down south. I will be the first one on this post next season when he makes the SportsCenter top 10, drops 30 pts, or shatters a back board with his amazing athleticism and dunking ability. But when he gets knocked on his ass by a 6'10 TRUE PF bruiser. I expect a letter from you sir!

People who criticized Martin for his first class don't understand recruiting.

Just as people criticize Tyndall for signing this guy are clueless.

So you never at 1 point criticized any of 1. Wes Washpun 2. Yemi 3. Dwight Miller?

BS

I defended Martin numerous times for those guys. I gave him a pass on that class.

I do recall a rant post I made regarding all of the mishaps CCM had made during his tenure. I would guess that those guys were brought up. But my stance on that first class was that CCM gets a pass because of the situation, circumstances and timing of his hire.

My gripes on CCM's recruiting were.....

1. Took Reese and Landry way too early
2. Failed to recruit a point guard when we didn't have one on the roster
3. Tried to recruit Armani as a PG
4. For the 2014 class, he had plenty of time to assemble a nice class and struck out for the most part. His best two players were a 3* point guard and a legacy player. His other two were a lifetime vol fan and a post player with unimpressive offers even though we could offer immediate playing time. Both those guys were 150+ players.
5. Overall, he set the bar too low IMO

Hey bTo, I posted a question for you and others in the "USM players haven't asked for a release yet" thread.

Janis was one of my favorites back in my younger days. I still listen to her on CD's, makes me feel young again! She was from Texas in case you didn't know and she sung what I called a "Blues-Rock".

Edit: I almost forgot, BOOOOMMM!! for Jabari!

Was catering to the cartoon question marks over the heads of some posters who look puzzled when you reference Van Halen :)

McGhee is rated 87 by 247 sports. Turman was rated 89 and Cofer 89 so about the same as the two that decommitted.

Offer lists is typically a better comparison, and when you look at who McGhee OVd to and realize what committable offers he actually had, doesn't compare to the other 2 really.

I've got no issue with this commitment, I just find it funny the double standard many have. Maybe not you, but many have criticized Martin's first class and primarily the fact he wasted scholarships on guys just to fill a roster. Nobody knows what McGhee will turn out to be, as I've said I think he'll be solid, but his profile looks a lot like an early CCM recruit that many griped about.
