they are probably in the pool practicing their hall of fame speeches.Trophies? How about a team pool party after the season with IPAD's from the coach after going winless the whole season.

If a kid is not old enough to understand the difference between winning and losing they should not be playing competitive sports. This might seem off topic but it feeds right into the attitudes these kids have nowadays. The generation coming out the past few years was bad enough wait 5 more when we run into the home-schooled generation with parents pushing for laws to outlaw the scouting services and demanding every kid that plays college football get drafted in the NFL. We are raising a generation of stupid, talentless egomaniac, pill poppers.
I had to sit with a straight face at dinner with my wifes boss as his 12 year old home-schooled kid told me a story of how he is a cat whisperer and can understand what every cat says by the tone of its meow. Kids need to be around other mean as-ed kids to tell them yes dude you suck and yes kid your breath stinks. We need to realize that just because you are the smartest person in a room full of idiots does not necessarily make you a genius.
thats what happens when you give them trophies for participation....

My kid understands winning and losing but enjoys playing despite the outcome because the game is fun and he doesn't have someone who is an idiot as a coach. He has had coaches that teach the basics of the game but knows kids have to have fun if they are going to come back. Our little basketball team won every game but our baseball team went 6-13 and he loved both because he is loving the game. He went to camp and was never taught to bunt but was bunting because he watched how Michael Bourn did it on TV. He was reading before he got into Kindergarden because he is really smart. My point is he believes in himself in whatever area not just sports.
But, it makes the point of Breakerboy that you have to believe in yourself if you want others to believe in you. My kid may never step on a middle school court or field, but he is developing a love of sports that he can enjoy for a lifetime. The problem with kids is when they don't keep score and do not learn how to win and lose properly. This will have to come from the coaches and the parents. I have seen the positive results of competitive sports when done properly. Unfortunately, our society has steered itself away from that mantra in far too many cases.
I don't play that winning doesn't matter stuff. Every young player/prospect I come in contact with I teach to dominate every rep. Shake their hands and conversate after the game but during the game bring it to them every down. You know it's about having fun but kids just out there to have fun can end up getting hurt if they think guys aren't going to try and knock their heads off every play. I love to see a kid cry after losing a game. Let's me know the game means something to him. I don't teach taking cheap shots(I don't play that ish) but I do teach playing aggressive and intimidation. I think not keeping score really is just dumb. Makes no sense to play if there's not a winner or loser.

Participation trophies are ok for 5-8 year olds. They are just learning. Participation trophies for everyone else is just sad. Upward has damaged youth sports IMO; not only are participation trophies handed out, but the last Upward basketball game I saw they could only guard the player with the same color armband. I was so confused.

Sorry, my fault. I was actually trying to point out that the limpwristed way we raise kids these days leads to kids with inflated egos. My point is when you have kids with absolutely no talent thinking they do as the norm how inflated do you think the egos of the kids with actual talent will be. I can at least see the point of a talented conceited kid.So we're so off base we're talking about crushing 6 year old's athletic experiences? Sad. Football season can't get here soon enough.
