Dalton Santos will visit Texas next weekend.
The Texas coaches reached out to Van linebacker Dalton Santos a few days ago, extending a verbal scholarship offer, and Santos will now join Johnson on a UT official visit next Friday.
"Honestly, it just happened a couple days ago. Coach (Stacy) Searels will be here, coach (Mack) Brown and caoch (Manny) Diaz on Wednesday. think Then I'm taking a visit up there next week," Santos said.
Santos is a player who has seen his stock shoot through the roof of late, especially after an impressive showing at the Under Armour All-American game, and Texas made contact with the hard-hitting linebacker with a phone call last week.
"Coach Searels called me. He said a spot is open and it's yours. He asked if I wanted to take an official visit and I told him I did," Santos said. "Right now I'm still committed to Tennessee, but we'll see what happens."
The 6-3, 251-pound Santos has been committed to Tennessee since August but he's been exploring other options. Last week he visited Arkansas and Texas now has its chance to make a strong impression.
"I'm from Texas. Texas has big interest in my book," Santos said. "We're going to think about it, get down there and check it out, and see how it goes."
One factor on which Texas can lean is proximity, but Santos said it's more than just distance that has the Longhorns shooting up his list.
"Really, Texas is Texas. If it was just about being close, Arkansas would be there, Texas A&M, schools like that," Santos said. "There's just something about that place (Texas)."
At the Under Armour game, Santos had a chance to hang out with a number of Texas commitments, and the future Longhorn players made a strong impression.
"I played with a bunch of guys up there in the Under Armour game - like Malcom Brown, Peter Jinkens. We just clicked," Santos said.
Texas had gone by Van previously but didn't have any available scholarships. The numbers have since become more flexible, opening the door for Santos to pick up a verbal offer and line up his visit. Next weekend will be key in Santos' decision, but he does admit that Texas is a school that he's followed closely for some time.
"I grew up in a family that's Texas Longhorn fans to the end," Santos said. "Growing up a Texas fan, that helps them out a ton. We'll just have to see."
Texas is recruiting Santos to play inside linebacker.
