'11 TE Eric MacLain

Eric was on campus today to take in practice. His next stop is Auburn tomorrow. I still don't like where we are right now, but I hope that changes.

We sure could use Eric as an OL lol. I just don't see us recruiting him as a TE and sometimes the truth hurts. I did watch a recent tape on him where he's trimmed down (guessing it's recent) and he did look pretty impressive moving around, running, etc. though.

He really impressed recently at the VTO Combine. Caught everything thrown to him. I predict he starts out as a TE.

Glad everything's going good with ya Sab. It's good to see ya back man.

Yea I agree he does look pretty impressive as a TE in those tapes I watched. We might actually have a pretty good shot with him if we consider recruiting him as a TE which could very well happen since Dooley is so big on them also if we do land him and it doesn't work out we could move him to OL which is a position of need. Could be a win/win situation. Also I'm sure Dooley would love to win this kid back.

Jacques Smith just posted this on his Facebook:

my boy eric macLain was at practice today.....big orange showed him a lot of love!!! dude is a freaking BEAST!!!! WE gotta make sure he signs with big orange!!

You can always tell you have a keeper when you can't decide whether the biggest benefit comes from someone like Jacques playing on the football field or from ripping up his LOI and hiring him as a full-time recruiter. Luckily for us, it seems we get the best of both worlds.

This is very true.

Like I said, Eric is just playing the game right now...I think after the O&W game (isn't he coming back to visit for that?) He will start giving the Vols more props.

He hasn't said anything about the O&W game yet, but I would suspect he will be here. He was last year.

He has stated a couple of times that he is coming back to Knoxville for the June camp for sure.

Commenting on his list of favorites, he says Tennessee is at the top of the list followed closely by Auburn. Virginia Tech is third and Duke is fourth. He says that Auburn and Tennessee are virtually even now because he loves the “family atmosphere” at Auburn.

Per Scout...

Vols are his leader once again.

“It was amazing to see,” MacLain’s father, Michael MacLain, said of Tuesday’s practice. “Everything just flows.”

“Tennessee is the benchmark,” said Michael MacLain, who added that Knoxville is still home. “We’re just taking passion out and putting process in.”

Michael MacLain made clear that the miscommunication between UT and his family that led to his son opening up his recruitment is long gone. He was very complimentary of the way UT has recruited his son.

Now it says he will announce after his senior year

I think after he sees the way we use Stocker this year, and then looks at our depth at TE, he's ours.

Michael MacLain said his son hopes to attend the Orange and White Game on April 17 and will definitely attend UT’s summer camp.

Looks like he will be on campus 2 more times in the near future.

If we were going to have a roster full of Wittens and Browns and Cottams and Stockers coming back in '11, I could see how we would still try to convince MacLain to be an OL and risk losing his commitment over his reluctancy.

But we won't. Bartholomew doesn't seem destined to play, and Rivera is pretty unproven. There's almost no reason he couldn't help us as a true freshman at TE next season.

It's extremely good news that we're back in the driver's seat here.

All the OL talk stemmed from him being almost 270 as a JR in HS, he's down to 240 right now.

OL* :)

And right, but he's obviously gained the weight easily before and has the frame where he could be a stud there. But as we lack more depth than a dry riverbed we bring a guy like Eric in wherever he wants to line up.
