'11 TE Eric MacLain

I can't see how you can say we are out. He is visiting UT either Wednesday or Thursday this week and will be here for camp in June as well.

+1

I think he's like any other 18-year-old. You see all these other cats going to places like USC, Notre Dame, etc. for a free trip. Plus you get to evaluate how much people like you. I think he ends up a Vol if we want him.

I don't think we're out of it, but we need to make a solid impression on him anytime he's here and he is going to want to see how the TE fits into the offense this fall.

I think we land Eric in the end...but I think his recruitment will end up going into 2011 no matter what he says now.

i can't imagine Duke really being a factor when it comes down to it.

LV let me know if you think this assesment is close to what is going on here.

I think Eric knows that the Vols are where he wants to be. He just wants to "make them pay" for how they treated him and earn him back. I think we really are sitting at number one in his mind but publicly he wants people to think he is punishing us.

Once we start showing him the love and getting him on campus soon he will start singing another tune soon.

Sound about right?:hi:

Scout's Quick Take from the VTO camp.

After projecting as an offensive tackle a year ago, looked great in the state championship game and showed off his new body after losing twenty pounds from the Scout.com combine last year. Obviously well coached in his routes, great hands, good strength against even the strongest of linebackers, and plays faster than this forty time may indicate.

i think you could be on to something. we've got plenty of time to make him feel loved again and he will be in Knoxville 2 times in the next month.

Next year, we have senior Bartholomew and junior Rivera in what is supposed to be a TE heavy offense. Early PT in the SEC is calling his name.

Wonder if Cutcliffe's been on Eric for a while. He would've been a FR David's last year here as coordinator, but I'm sure he has recruiting roots and may have kept up with him for a while. I wouldn't count them out as not being a factor entirely but I think we can make up ground this summer.

No way a recruit of his caliber goes to Duke. I would only believe that when the ink on a Duke LOI is dry.

I've said it before. There are two reasons we didn't jump on MaClain right off the bat:
1. Dooley had to get his hands around everything in house and get everybody doing and saying the things he wants to do and say and how he wants it done and said. No time to contact anybody. Anybody offended? Tough.
2. We are on the list of 3 of the top 5 TE's (per Scout). That's pretty high cotton. I'm not saying that we wouldn't honor his scholarship offer, but dang, there are plenty of TE's that are, at least, rated above him.
I'm not saying drop him, but there are reasons for what happens. And it's not always as black and white as it seems. Truth is, we have TE's on the team. And we will recruit TE's. Our biggest concern is getting interior linemen on both sides of the ball. We do that, we win.
BYOBBIO

I'm sorry, but reason number two is just silly. MacLain is a big time player, and our TE depth is sorry.

99.9% of the time you're right about this but remember the kid who had offers from Florida, Bama, FSU and UT and ends up committing to New Mexico? I mean I could see a guy favoring Duke over some other places due to academics, what the heck has New Mexico got above those other universities, creative pottery making? Kids these days make crazy decisions sometimes, and you can't rationalize or explain crazy.

TOS has an article about a very good visit at VT.

Eric says he is a huge vol fan,, we need his talent and I think he will be a contributor. We are supposedly running a two tight end set a lot this coming year.
