'11 MS JUCO DB Izauea Lanier (Tennessee Commit)

and its the rightthing to do. cant be held hostage when we are in desperate need of capable bodies.

Agree. Loften had his chance and had he taken care of business he would be enrolled and in school by now. No need to keep dragging it out any longer.

Yeah, I saw it on another site that Lanier supposedly tried to commit to Ole Miss yesterday, but he was turned away because they have run out of room. They also had a few Juco DB's, all of which were mid-term guys.

They have run out of room mostly die in part to Nutt flipping like 3-4 MSU recruits. Talk about a bad month for MSU, they have lost 3-4, and a 4* WR is reportedly on the verge of bouncing for Arky if the Hogs have room.

Key word there is "supposedly". I'll bet we hear different from Lanier in the future.

He mentioned in the article on TOS that he had not heard much from Ole Miss since he found out he would not be an EE. It is not like he is going to tell everyone that he got denied by Ole Miss.

Agree. Thanks. I really feel like Wilcox seals the deal with the in home this week

Just passed Florida to #18 in Rivals.

About to pass Ole Miss as well,

Just saw: (Florida will pass us back FWIW)

I seen over on the MB on Rivals that Lanier was expected to play for Auburn if he would have been an EE, but he obviously never got the grades for that. Thought it was pretty interesting to read that because I hadn't heard much about Lanier and AU before. However it is pretty comforting to know that one of our current commits was heavily pursued by the country's best.

He originally signed there in 09..

He committed to Auburn originally in 09 and again in 2010, when he remained committed until November. I don't remember why they parted ways. My guess is, Auburn's national exposure this season allowed them to land other prospects they like better.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know that. According to the Auburn people he would have been a take for them had he been an EE, but I don't know how reliable they are.

That could be the reason, but I think he was expected to be an EE until just recently, long after he parted ways with Auburn.

Exactly. That was just recent news that he wouldn't be an EE. Well I guess that squashes that idea. It probably has more to do with the fact that AU has a worse number crunch problem then we have right now. They are actually going to be turning down some 4 stars on NSD it seems. Oh well. I'm very happy with the Lanier pickup.

There was a post by one of the writers from 247 on their message board that said they had talked to him tonight and there was some truth to the earlier commit try to Ole Miss. But to me thats all water under the bridge because we got a good quality player at a position of need.

But you're willing to, right? With no substantiation....or do you have some?

Ole Miss recently lost both 4* DB's Holliman and Johnson to Louisville -- are you telling me they turned down Lanier??? Sorry, I'm not buying that one, lol. I suspect that what Ole Miss told him was that they wanted to see if they can get both Holliman and Johnson back, which they are trying to do. If that does not work out, they want Lanier badly, you can bet.

The reason Lanier committed today is because he looked at our commitment list vs our board and realized that if he wanted to be a Vol (I think that was his plan all along) he had better do it soon or the train would leave the station. If Lanier waited until NSD (or even close) to commit, the numbers crunch could have become very real for UT. Moore would be a take no matter what, as would players like Dawson, Richardson, Clear, Gabe Wright, Maggitt, and Lane -- all of which we are in very good shape for. Lanier is just a half notch below those players, but there could be a surprise addition or two by NSD who could have kept him out if they all committed.

Basically, Lanier waited as long as he could. He did not want to be in the position of Xavier Ward, who played the game too long and got caught. He could have played for several of the best teams in the country, but he waited too long and the train left the station, leaving him behind to look at second tier programs.

...and Orta, which I don't understand. It seems they are definitely cutting ties with Loften.

Right. I have advocated for a while now for us to cut ties with Loften. If a kid cannot qualify with an extra year to do so, he is too unmotivated or too intellectually challenged to stay in school even if he gets here.

I think Hubbs is wrong on Orta. I think he has been a fall back position for us all along, to be used if we whiffed on some other folks.

Excited about Lanier coming here, he is a great pick up, but it makes you wonder how we sit with Moore right now. Not sure if taking Lanier has anything to do with the fact that we may not get Moore, but I guess we'll find out on NSD.
