'11 JUCO DT Maurice Couch - UT Commit

Good call. Although, I wouldn't consider that winning the job since he didn't start afterward.

I wouldn't either. I see Ayers, Walls, and Hughes rotating in and out of the two deep starting out in sept. Couch I think will find a way to start beside Malik Jackson by the start of the season. A lot of that can change with non qualifiers and injuries by then tho too. Last year John Brown failed to get in and Walls got hurt. I really hope UT doesn't start off in the hole like that again.

I don't think a freshmen dt will find it's way into the starting rotation this year. Maybe two deep. Only reason freshmen started this year was because there was no choice. Linemen usually need time to develop to able to play in the sec.

Couch isn't a freshman, that's why I said "Couch and Hughes starting" in the first post. Wright and Johnson would give enough depth (one of them would likely be in the 2-deep) for Chuck to move Jackson back to DE. He isn't the right size to be a starting DT on most SEC teams, just like Brown wasn't the year before. We just played them there out of sheer necessity.

He is more like Robert Ayers, a big DE, which will be MUCH needed on obvious running downs. I could see Wilcox making him also a DE in a 3-4 alignment, perhaps.

Yeah Hughes has the best talent. But he hasn't matured yet and it is costing us a good player.

The same was said of Robert Ayers...but he came on his senior year (don't recall how well he did his junior year). I expect the light (NFL $$$) to come on in Hughes cranium this year, if healthy. Nothing motivates more than seeing the cash train leaving the station.

Ayers was actually behind some good players. His effort was never a problem. And he had to deal with a staff that favored seniors. Hughes has had his effort questioned by two different staffs. Which bothers me. I do hope you're right and he turns on this year.

I remember reading and article about Ayers during his senior season, I believe, and the writer talked specifically about Ayers work ethic being subpar most of his time here, and Ayers acknowledged that Fulmer stayed on his rear about it. He said it took him a long time, but he finally got the message during this junior season.

My apologies, sir. I didn't see that it was already posted. Must have missed it. All credit goes to hldngaflush for the Couch discovery. Congrats.

Can't fault the kid for wanting to wear the number that is going to represent the number of career sacks he gets.
