"Six quarterbacks have been elected to go to the skills camp they're (USC) hosting, and the one who performs the best will get a scholarship offer," Scroggins said. "You know, there's no gearing up for an event like this. I've got to just take it one day at a time and be ready to perform when I'm out there."

Per Rivals...

From what I read, Scroggin is probably a top 3 quarterback in California with Nick Montana and Austin Hinder (thus far, no clear distinction between their levels). As a point of comparison (from what I read on Cal boards), Cal delayed offering Hinder because they were initially hoping for Heaps. In other words if Hinder is roughly around Scroggins, then Heaps is clearly at another atmosphere.

And I noticed some people believe Heaps' stock has been dropping due to Rivals (which the West Coast branch was furious over the low rating), but do realize that Heaps has had only one combine for them and Heaps started slowly because he hasn't played since his state championship game. While I also believe that Scout overranked Heaps, from what I heard and seen, Heaps is clearly a top 3 QB. The best free report on Heaps is probably the Notre Dame one. As they said, Heaps should rank somewhere between a mid 4 (5.9 on rivals) to high 4 (6.0). The main thing preventing a possible 5 star is his upside.

the people i talk to say that cal thinks hinder has a far higher ceiling than heaps and will be the best qb tedford has ever recruited at cal. i'm not sure if that is legit or just them realizing they are out of the heaps race.

with barklay and corp there, no qb in their right mind should go to SC. pete carroll doesn't bench starters

You may get him after all...
With Marve coming onboard, it's going to be a race for the last QB scholly. I doubt it stays unfilled longer than a week or two at the most. The longer Heaps drags this out, the less I want him. In fact...as of today, I don't care what he does, one way or the other. Most folks, and I think the staff too, are high on Scroggins and maybe Cam Newton, instead.
Cal is certainly a better prospect for Heaps than either UW or BYU

Good point if it weren't for the fact that Marve will be paying his own way and won't take up a scholarship until the following year.

Geeez dude, it's May for Christmas sake.

And 4 of the top 5 are already committed.
2010 College Football Quarterback: Quick List

It's a bit frustrating to me, even at this juncture because if Heaps and Scroggins don't decide real soon, then Hendrix or Munchie is liable to take that 2nd scholly, and that's likely going to be it for us

I remember thinking years ago that it had to be tough on FSU (when they were in the top 5 every year), cause alot of offers they hand out would get gobled up by the 3* guys right away while FSU was waiting for the 5*ones.
Those guys value the offer greater than the 5* guys who think schools can just wait indefinitely

This argument is like an airborne virus, it's jumping from thread to thread...

People act like Hendrix is someone we want only if we can't get others. Heck, he's 6'3" 220, excellent arm, very strong HS program--I want him now. I think he'll be good--really good.

You don't understand at all how recruiting works. Don't be offended, it's complicated. Read Meat Market. It will help you immensely.

A coach won't accept a commitment from a guy like a 3* that is borderline good, if they have a 5* guy that they have a shot at. The 3* will be told to wait. But if they know where they are with other prospects and they know how many of a certain position they need, then they will go ahead and take the guy.(sometimes Lane didn't take a guy just to take him last year or we could've had a full class)

Look at the situation we had with Robert Nelson. He was told he had to wait, because we were waiting on Tana Patrick. When Patrick picked Bama, then we told Nelson he could sign his papers.

Great points!

I know we want the best QB we can get, but it would be nice to get one who wants UT as much as we want him. That's an intangible that matters to some extent, imo.

We don't need some guy who isn't going to totally bust his tail for the Big Orange. And, I know it grows on players after they're enrolled, do the Vol Walk, run through the T, and feel the rush of being a Vol... but still.

From many accounts, Hendrix wants UT. That counts for something and I too am not certain which of these QB's really is that far above him in talent.

I see what you're saying, but the kid has to have that 'fire in his belly' to be the best to start with. No school is going to supply that. I think Coleman is an example of this.. Was UT not his 'dream school'? If he had that fire I'm talking about, he would still be here.

I agree it's not enough without the talent (Coleman), but Newton and Marve appear to be more talented than was BJ. Sort of like BJ is more talented than was Cooter, but Jim Bob may have had more school spirit.

It's that little extra above the superior talent folks like these have. Peyton loved being a Vol. Tee Martin did too. These guys bought into the Orange at some point. I don't know when that happens, but some spark before the LOI is signed would be nice.

Hendrix appears to have already shown that, but have the others really made a strong of an impression on our staff concerning their interests in being our next championship QB?

But, as you said, there is something more that drives the best. Peyton was known for his work ethic and extraordinary drive to be the best... from the day he stepped on campus.

Good question, I have to believe the ones they are working on the hardest have made that impression.

Yessss, that's what I want to see in whoever we pull, be it Heaps, Scroggins, Hendrix, Marve, Newton.....

yeah thats true. IMO what it all boils down to is if we take a JUCO or not. If we do, our best choice is Scroggins. He has the higher ceiling of the two, and with the JUCO he will be given adequate time to mature and completely understand the system. If we dont take one, Heaps is our best choice. He is more polished of the two now. He doesnt have a very high ceiling, and many think he is near his full potential now. so imo, its all depends on the juco.
