Very interesting....

The first mention of Jesse pushing his date back to the Elite 11 camp was posted here (http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-recruiting/67926-10-ca-qb-jesse-scroggins-post2455022.html?highlight=July+25#post2455022) on the evening of June 28th. I don't have the original GQ post to confirm it, but it seems that the interviewer caught up with Jesse on the afternoon of the the 28th.

The reports of Urban and Jesse having a late-night phone call were made on the night of June 26th (well, after midnight on the 27th), here: (http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-recruiting/67926-10-ca-qb-jesse-scroggins-post2452123.html?highlight=Meyer+meeting#post2452123). So, unless I'm missing something, Urban and Jesse talked on the night of the night of the 26th, and then Jesse told an interviewer two days later that he had decided to move the date of his announcement back to the Elite 11 camp on July 25th.

Did Urban and Jesse cook up a plan to screw over UT? The case can seriously be made....and all under the innocuous cover of waiting for a "big-time" environment to make his announcement.

I don't usually get wrapped up into conspiracy theories...but...WOW. You know that Urban wants to get back at Kiffin...looks like he may have just done so.

This would only get better if Kiffin asked Jesse to do this to Meyer :).

Is this possibly an additional reason as to why the staff is so worried about UF?

But it wouldn't really screw Florida like it could us. As much as Jesse would want to screw the team that would end up his rival if he went down south, I think he has more integrity than that....hopefully.:crossfingers:

Our coaches would not be very bright if they did not see this and move to alternatives if your scenario is accurate. Retting would have been pushed to commit already if your theory true.

Carroll and Kiffin put Rettig in the same holding pattern. They both told him he woul dget an offer after Scroggins decided. I believe he agreed to wait so we have no worries. The main issue is Rettig might pick USC. I kinda like that Grayson kid anyway if it comes to this.

I am still not sold on UF and if our staff wasn't sure I think we would have already moved on Rettig. I think the depth chart + mothers family ties + putting the commitment off till camp = UT. He is our #1 target and I am sure the kid knows that. I think Kiffin already knows what is going to happen. But I guess you never know till the kid commits.

Perhaps, but I don't know...they don't know what was said. It puts them in an uncomfortable spot, and you yourself said they were very concerned about UF. All they know for sure is that Urban and Jesse spoke late one night on the phone and that Jesse later mentioned that he had pushed his date back. When he left our camp, he was planning on deciding after the USC camp....then either the USC camp, Urban, or perhaps something else made him change his mind.

The scenario is what it is...those things (the phone call and moving the date) happened. The staff would have to decide whether or not the two were related. Isn't talking to Jesse the only good way they could decide that? Would it make them so stupid to believe that everything was OK based on Jesse's comments?

If my theory is true and the coaches knew it to be true - then you're right...Retteig would have been pushed for a commitment. In a world of imperfect information, the coaches may not *know* it to be true...they just have the endpoints, not all the dots connecting them. I'm sure they have thought through it (because they know it happened), and apparently they have convinced themselves through some means that the two are unrelated - or they would have pushed another QB for a commitment.

McKnight had Frank Wilson awfully convinced that he was coming to Ole Miss a few years ago.... (that wasn't a similar situation, of course, but does demonstrate that the recruiting world is filled with imperfect information).

His mother getting a brand new house in LA and a new Mercedes may have also had something to do with that.

The way I look at it we will probably get Lamaison and Newton regardless if we get Scroggins or not. The only thing that will change is Rettig or Scroggins.

Jamie Newberg was on Rivals Radio today

Here's what he had to say:

1)Tennessee has a "great shot" at getting Scroggins. He also thinks that a couple other QB targets will emerge during their senior season this fall.

2) Said he wouldn't be surprised if we signed 12-13 total linemen.

You can listen to Jamie's interview at the following site. He and Chris Childers spend the first 5 minutes talking about UT, and a little time later on as well.

12-13 total lineman would be pretty sweet. If we could get a QB, the WR stuff will work itself out, if not oh well, we could just go back to "smash mouth football", jk (fixed) (there should be a smiley of one blowing its brains out).

f'n right he better.

But about Scroggins, Im not the least bit concerned if he goes to USCm so be it and if he goes to Florida he's a sucka. UT will get good qb's that will be coached up to be great. I just aint sweatin the Scroggin train.

agree with that.. lot of mis-information. We could also be re-thinking how we feel about Scroggins ourselves no matter what gets reported.

He comes to our camp and performs a little bit. Has a hip issue and sits. Then he goes to USC and performs as the top kid a few days later.

Maybe we look at that and decide he isn't all that interested in us??? How bad do we really want him if he isn't showing more interest to us?? Maybe it doesn't matter what he is saying because his actions told us more than his words...

another scenario...

His performance at the USC camp was quite interesting...there's no doubt that he really wanted that offer - but the miraculous recovery from being carted off the field here to performing that well there does cause one to pause a bit.

If the staff makes this situation end well without Scroggins signing with UT, it will be something to see!

I thought that situation was odd myself..didnt want to participate in teh camps at UT but did at USC..that is what has me concerned..seems like he thought he was too good to try out for us..

I would rather take retting or Lamison that has heart and WANTS to play for UT..
