09 CA S Byron Moore - UT Commit

We're not in position to redshirt guys in the secondary.

If we pick up two very good jc secondary guys (Izzy, Moore). Corner is a hard position to learn right out of high school. And I think we will be hurt by a very high graduation for our sophomore class. We had so many guys participate and make huge contributions we couldn't redshirt the numbers we needed to. Also our jc guys will be sophomores too. That class will be awesome as jun and sen but will hurt us numbers wise on graduation. JMO.

The problem is we don't have a lot of DBs better than the freshmen coming in. Unless they improve leaps and bounds over last year(I expect Teague and Brewer to) we'll need them. Also we need more speed on STs.

To tell the truth Waggner and Art Evans are two of the worst DBs I've seen line up for the Orange.

I can smell what your stepping in. But Waggener has improved. He went from 6 tackles and no interceptions his RS freshman year, to 5 interceptions with 3 returned for touchdowns. I don't know the tackle stats, but he had to have at least triple what he had in 09. He is definitely better at corner than at safety, simply because his cover skills vastly out weigh his tackling skill.

He has improved but he should have never been offered. He's not a talent that we should have on our team. We should consistently have high quality DBs in the mold of Byron Moore and others.

Wagner had 3 pick sixes last year and he is a bad DB don't make sense!

No one is downplaying his ball skills. When he got his hands on the ball it was to the races. However, his tackling skills were awful. A big liability to the team. He couldn't tackle the opposing WR in a phonebooth.

Also remember stats don't mean everything. So many factors and scenarios go into what makes a good player. He isn't a bad player at all, but if he doesn't make huge strides this offseason he probably won't have his starting spot in the Fall.

Agreed, PW does have good instincts but he missed too many tackles, like JJ, he needs to wrap up on contact and too, PW was too often caught out of position---both can be coached.

Possible (lineup) options;

C-JJ, Gordon/Wagner, Coleman
SS-Brewer, Martin
FS-Moore, Randolph
C-Teague, Lanier, Oliver, Orta

OR

C-Moore, Lanier, Orta, Coleman
SS-Brewer, Martin
FR-JJ, Randolph
C-Gordon, Teague/Wagner, Oliver

Freshmen Martin (granted, if academics are in order) and Randolph have too much talent not to see the field early and often, IMO.

How.can gordon and Teague swap as being starters in your prediction. Either one or the other would start in both senarios.

He is saying he is a silent to Miami. It could be another situation where he has told both coaching staffs that he would sign with them

What I hear from folks at USC is that he's having problems getting credits transferred to the U. So while he might have been planning to go there, it might not work out for him. UT will. I would be surprised if this weren't true.

Well Waggner has been here 3 full years and can't tackle so when do you think the coaches are going to decide to fix it? Hopefully soon.

Good question. That abortion of a tackle on Jefferson at LSU when he went 80+ yards for a touchdown on their opening play stands out like a sore thumb when I think about Waggner and his tackling skills. The coaches had him in the proper position to make the play and he just whiffed.

You are completely correct. One missed tackle is all it takes. One mistake can result in a TD. That's why if Waggner doesn't fix that flaw in his game he will find himself getting buried on the depth chart.

Not sure 1 missed tackle makes him a bad player. It's not like JJ hasn't missed tackles also, right?
