Utah State opens as early Vegas favorite @Tennessee

Year-in an year-out, UT is going to play one of the toughest schedules of any team in college football. It is brutal.

Here is my take on 2014.

Utah State - W
ASU - W
@ Okie - L
@ GA - L
FLA - L
Chattanooga -W
@ Ole Miss - L
Bama - L
@ USCe - L
Neck-tucky - W
Mizzou - L
@ Vandy - W

5-7?? Again??

I believe UT will win at least one of USCe, UF, Mizzou, and Ole Miss.

Agree. More likely to be SCar and/or Mizzou at home IMO. I will never ever pick them to beat UF until it happens again, possibly multiple times. Ole Miss should be a difficult game for us.

Okay... It's one thing to "hope" your team will win a game among those.

Bu what do you think? Why? Why just one? Which one?

Why do you think we will lose all those games?

Okie - Road game, Top 25 team.
UGA - Road game, Top 25 team.
FLA - Just my gut feeling.
Ole' Miss - Road game, Top 25 team.
Bama - Top 5 team
USCe - Road Game, Top 25 team
Mizzou - Road Game, Top 25 team

We played UGA incredibly close last year.

We beat USCe.

Mizzou is experiencing significant attrition everywhere.

UF is coming to Knoxville this time, still without an offense.

Ole Miss is about as up and down a team as you'll find in the SEC.

Me thinks you need to look at what the other SEC teams are losing first. Most are replacing their multi-year starter at QB. Chances are, UT can steal one.

Chances are that if a frog had wings, he wouldn't hop.

UF might be a wild card with it being at home, although it seems UT always has trouble with UF. Two in a row might be too much to ask.

The others are on the road. Until UT can show that they are a Top 25 caliber team, I'm not predicting them to beat any Top 25 teams on the road.

In order of likelihood IMO.... MU, USCe, UF, Ole Miss.

UT has more raw talent than the first two. The reports on player development sound very encouraging. Jones outcoached SOS last year and gets Pinkel at home after he lost several key playmakers on both sides of the ball. Mizzou who doesn't recruit well enough to just "reload" lost their best OL, best RB, 2 or 3 of their top WR's, QB, best two DL's, 2 of 3 starting LB's, best DB and 3 of 4 DB starters.

UF has talent but some pretty big holes. Their program is in disarray and is poorly coached. I think they are on their 3rd OC in 3 or 4 years. Muschamp is flailing about looking for someone to blame.

Ole Miss had a couple of really strong recruiting classes that are now mature. I have a lot of respect for Freeze. Overall though I think that UT matches up well with them. No SEC stadium is easy to visit but Ole Miss isn't as difficult as others.

At least you know that we will start the season undefeated with a win over your Aggies.

He's trying but he's biased. I think in the back of his mind he wants to convince himself that UT is worse than they are to make him feel better about USU's chances.

I strongly suspect that at least one of those teams disappoints expectations for next fall. My guess is Mizzou. One or two will not finish ranked.

Interesting you challenge others for saying that UT may win a game here or there but go on a "gut feeling" that UF beats UT in Neyland 4 weeks into their 4th new offense in 5 years... with none of them having been very effective?

Vol fans know Roper. He was an asst at UT and has largely followed Cutcliffe. Good coach but he's worked under Cut for a long time. Cutcliffe was the genius in Duke's O revival... not Roper. That's not saying he won't be a good one. But he's taking a big step up and out of Cut's shadow.

After the game in 2012, I finally put to rest in my heart that Tennessee will always find a way to lose to Florida. We just do. I'm not saying they are incapable of winning, I'm just saying I'd never ever put my hard earned money down on a UT win, and I'd never mark it up as a "W" in my preseason prediction ever.

When Tennessee is up, Florida is also up and they win. When Tennessee is down and Florida is down, Florida still wins.

Victories against Florida are usually markers for especially good seasons for Tennessee. We dont usually beat Florida and we certainly dont usually beat them during a ho-hum season.

If we couldnt beat UF in 2012, then you can just never predict a UT win over UF. If it happens its a surprise.

I apologize. I misread the score from last year.

I actually thought UT beat that 4 win Florida team last year.

So the streak is still alive? Is it 9 now, or 10?

Are you really going to "LULZ" over anything to do with Florida beating Tennessee?

Nevermind on the gut feeling. Florida wins because they are UF and you are UT.

Until somebody shows something different, that is enough analysis. You have to win a game every now and again to make it a rivalry.

I will lulz about a troll saying:

And then following it up with:

FLA - Just my gut feeling.

Are you trying to make me angry? Sorry. Won't work.

Now, if it's analysis you want, I'll give you mine as to why I feel we can beat UF-- and I'll do better than offering a "gut feeling" after chiding people for analysis instead of gut feelings.

UF is struggling right now in everything from scheme to leadership. They will be taking an already wretched offense and putting those players into the first year of a new scheme.

Have a nice day, and try to enjoy being in the freaking WAC. lulz

Hasnt that been true for every year of the Muschamp era?

Also, Tennessee had a pretty wretched offense as well as defense and they lost tons of senior leadership, mostly on the lines and we HOPE we have a QB although last year was about the biggest QB cluster***** I have ever seen at UT so it's hard not to improve when you were at rock bottom.

If we couldnt beat a hapless Florida in 2012 with Tyler Bray and CP and JH at home in K-ville, I dont see how you can ever truly predict a win. You can say they will win a bunch and get lucky every now and then, but there is no grounds for predicting it.

none of those seniors except for maybe one on the Defensive end was much of a leader. hell, none of the seniors period were much of a leader. the Defensive didnt even produce very much.

Right, but now we are starting the guys that were BEHIND those sucky players on the depth chart, as in not good enough to beat them out for the job.

Did I predict a win? The resident USU troll responded to sjt's statement about potential wins:

I believe UT will win at least one of USCe, UF, Mizzou, and Ole Miss.

who then followed it up with:

In order of likelihood IMO.... MU, USCe, UF, Ole Miss.

Now, UT was in the first year of scheme implementation on both sides of the ball. I expect improvement on both sides due to comfort in the scheme and a combination of maturation and added speed. They may disappoint. But the above paragraph is far from a guarantee or even a prediction. It is a statement of my expectations.
