The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

So many assume Pearl can come back in and work the same magic as before, but there's no guarantee he can. What if he comes back and flops? What excuse will posters have then?

If Bruce goes elsewhere and is hugely successful, then you haters get a pass, right? Even if he were to take bama to the dance next year as a 2/4/6-seed (as long as we're doing what ifs) - you'll stand on your principles, right?

Btw, I hope we make the NCAAs and all of this becomes moot.

Honestly, they are a bubble team regardless. If you base your decision on whether a bubble team gets in the tourney or not, you're letting the committee make the decision for you. At the end of the day, they are a bubble team. A bubble team losing in the first round or a bubble team hosting a NIT game.

Now that is the analysis I back 100%. :good!:

Think about it, Bruce Pearl coming back would cause huge excitement around the program. The fans would absolutely go nuts and it should be a no brainer for Hart to hire him back. Yea, he's got baggage but you have to take chances this day and time to do what's best for Tennessee basketball. Obvisiously we're losing fan support and ticket sales are going to go down. I like Martin and I think he's a good guy, but let's face the facts, he's NOT getting the job done. We have elite talent on this team but no one to show for it. I don't think Martin is the right fit and he's probably better suited somewhere else. I would love for Bruce Pearl to come back and have positive energy around the program again. It's possible that he may never coach Tennessee again but it's also possible that he does.

Exactly. Ticket sales would skyrocket. Attendance would increase And recruiting would improve immediately. Here's another thought, if Hart hires someone besides Pearl, they will constantly be compared to Pearl and if they have the same results as CCM, Hart is going to feel the heat. His best option is to hire Pearl and look like a hero. Once Pearl has us back in Sweet 16's and Elite 8's, everyone will forget he lied about a damn BBQ.

Solid plan for the program.

My opinion is that it's ridiculous to rehitch the wagon to a guy that got is in hot water with the NCAA by lying about something stupid. It's as simple as that.

I don't care if he's the second coming of Coach K or the reincarnation of Wade Houston.

This is point of view is why the UT Athletics has struggled mightily since Dickey retired as AD.

Hamilton got lucky with hiring Bruce, and Bruce should have never been let go!

Bruce was the best basketball coach ever at UT! Even at his worse he's better than Martin, Houston, Devoe, Green, or O'Neil.

If UT wants to be a winner again in basketball it will take BP or someone very similar to him to get it done.

I can't bring myself to root against Tennessee but I just don't see another year of this guy being anything but a detriment to our program. He's a lame duck if he comes back and that will kill recruiting. And I know fan apathy has set in. And the way I know is that I'm not interested in attending games and watching them is like a chore. And I'm a complete sheep. I stood by Dooley for 2.5 years and I did the same for Martin. Just sick of losing.

Sometimes in life and sports, you have to take hard losses in order start the recovery process. It's tough to root against the Vols. However, I wanted a knockout punch with Dooley and Mizzou provided it, as I had obviously supported him longer than I should've. Didn't think he could get it done, but was towing the company line. Not doing that again. If Mizzou provides the knockout punch. So be it. If CM is going to be here next year, then by all means, keep winning. If these next games determine whether he is or not, well, I'd rather start healing next year, then spend another year in hospice just laying around waiting for it to be over.
Sorry if that offends, but it's happened 3 times now. Fulmer's Wyoming was a relief. Dooley's mizzou was a relief. Looking for relief again.

So . . . Why not find the someone very similar without NCAA problems?

I don't get what's so detrimental about my point of view.

I don't know if you have noticed but the NCAA has lost a lot of credibility and power in the last three years. But, if it makes them fell better, when BP is hired give him a full time compliance office to oversee his activities. Then the Vols can start winning big games again, and filling TBA. It's a no brainer, BP loves the Vols, and the Vols love BP!

I think your point of view about why UT shouldn't or can't is understandable.
However, hate/bhurt about BP is palpable for many though and many that are against it take the high and mighty stance about his lie. I think it's ridiculous.

It is hard to pull against the Vols but it's equally hard sit back and watch the program die a slow death. I'm ready for a life saving transplant.

Pearl will not have NCAA problems after August 23. The reason most of the anybody but Pearl crowd want a little known coach is because it's like Mark Twain said "It is easier to fool someone than to get someone to admit they have been fooled.".
As I said before Pearl was fired that the trouble with change is you always know what you are losing, but not what you are going to get. We have a proven winner right here in town just waiting for a call.

Not sure a 7-10 is a bubble team, that's still very attainable, but to each their own.

It's a honest question. I see all this he better bring him back, he's the only option, etc. What's gonna happen if a move is made, Pearl isn't even considered, and we end up with Zo 2.0?

I didn't say he was our only option. I'm saying he would be our best option. Sure he lied to the NCAA which was incredibly stupid for him to do but the man is a winner. He has that winning mentality that Martin lacks. He has won everywhere he's been and it's worth the risk in my opinion. The fans still love him and you can tell he still loves the University of Tennessee. He has a lot of passion for the fans and the University. Hiring him back would cause huge excitement around the program and recruits would take notice. I still support my Vols like every Vol fan should but face the facts, Martin is not getting the job done. If you think we're struggling this year, can you imagine what it'll be like next year? Martin may be a nice guy but he's not the right fit for this program. With that being said, I think Bruce Pearl is still our best option. He's done a lot for Tennessee basketball and I think he deserves to have another chance. There's not one coach out there whose a saint and he's not perfect but the man is a winner! Something Tennessee basketball needs to start doing again.

I just watched the man on ESPN. All I can say is I miss having him as coach and his passionate approach. At the very least he can articulate the specifics of the game instead of "mumble mumble mumble"

I'm a UT alumnus, long-time donor and football season ticketholder. I would view the rehiring of Bruce Pearl as an indication that Dave Hart "gets it" and has more control over the Athletic Department than I thought. I would also consider making the 10 hour round-trip drive to watch UT Basketball again, something I have not done since they fired BP.

Coaching Tennessee Basketball has always been challenging. Ray Mears and Bruce Pearl are the only coaches that have successfully cracked the code in my lifetime.
