Allen West is a moron

Negative. People are much more mobile today.

Obviously, there's always been some migration, but lots of people stayed put. We're talking pre-1900 Europe here. Families might stay in the same region for hundreds of years.

Hundreds of years. I can buy that.

300,000,000 people across 50 states. Velo, these folks migrated.

What especially irks me about West's message on this is that it reinforces the notion that you should be suspicious of someone not like you, be it the different language, the way they socialize with one another, or just what they wear.

The entire theses of the ad is to resist that and to embrace the fact that the people living here -- be it 12th generation or recently emigrated --want basically the same things.

The more I think about it the more I view West's comments --and the comments of his supporters -- as about the most uneducated and hateful premise imaginable for a country like our own.

Yeah, just because I thought if you immigrated here you should learn the predominate language.

Try immigrating anywhere else and not learning the language. Doesn't work well.

F'ing LG starting a thread in the middle of the day. Well, prepare yourselves for a 50 post run.....

This is ahistorical. History actually tells us the opposite. First generation immigrants from Europe typically settled in immigrant communities. They continued to practice their own languages and own customs. Their children were often bilingual and bicultural, with an emphasis placed on their parents' languages and customs. Their children's children, that is the third generation, were usually the first to embrace English and to neglect the import and significance of their forebears' languages and cultures.

Their children were bi......now we know where it came from. Damn immigrants.

The expat communities in Eastern Europe circa 1990-2000 would beg to differ. They thrived when they spoke English and the majority of residents in Prague, Budapest, etc. did not.

You are so obviously incapable of even perceiving the poignancy of the commercial's underpinnings, much less to appreciate them, that any effort to explain to you why the commercial is touching, and not insulting, is utterly pointless.

Dude, anybody reading this shiite at 2 in the afternoon needs a damn 5HE to follow it. I got sleepy after the 50th syllable in the 3rd word. You don't like his ass because he is a Vol. Own up.

It can be counted on that you will always be able to find one irrelevant example.

This one that had multiple ethnicities and cultures seems to be doing just fine.

I respectfully disagree. We have always had multiculturalism, however, the citizenry were generally united in language and national direction. Now, not so much.

Was pretty easy for me to live in India three years ago, Dubai, Rome...

Where are you guys moving that it is difficult to do anything without knowing the native language? I'm truly curious.

No it doesn't.

Look I could give a shizz about the commercial or West's comments but you are completely wrong in this assertion. People wishing to immigrate to this country should learn to speak English and we as a country shouldn't be so accommodating to those that refuse.

The socialist libs want us to do everything the way the rest of the world does it. I think in this instance we should give them what they want. Reform our immigration to match Germany or New Zealand. Enforce it with extreme prejudice.

I support legal immigration an diversity but I don't have a problem demanding English being the top priority in language...

I agree with that, but at the same time I don't see the singing of the anthem in another language as a direct assault on the English language. It was merely a celebration of our country and the melting pot that it has always been.

I do find it quite interesting that those opposed to cultural diversity also appear to be capitalists.

Seems to me that Smith wrote extensively on both the value of diversity in production and innovation as well as the value of absolutely unfettered markets. Government restrictions on who can and cannot live in a certain place are a fortiori government restrictions on labor; and, government restrictions on labor are fetters to the market.

As far as nation-states failing due to diversity, I'm pretty sure I'd rather have a failed nation-state than a nation-state which attempts to explicitly exclude other cultures.

I find it quite interesting that those who think we can't have cultural diversity and still have a common language, high expectations, and a common goal are idiots.

Those that are against multi-culturalism. They don't want their culture to change, and they do not want the other cultures to survive in the US. That is a desire for exclusion.

This generalization is gross bullshiite.
