Seriously? Celebrating diversity of heritage is balkanization? and this is the guy the TP reveres as a good conservative?

I support legal immigration an diversity but I don't have a problem demanding English being the top priority in language...

In this case it's actually 1900, and the era of Teddy Roosevelt, apparently.

I wonder if immigrants then actually learned English faster than they do now?

I think both serve as examples. I think West's reaction to the ad is ridiculous, but he's entitled to his opinion. LG applying any significance to this is overblown as well. This stuff is so insignificant in the grand scheme. Yes, I understand I've commented in this thread but really, why should we care?

Yes they did, they had too. As a country we did not go out of our way to accommodate other languages. They had to learn English to succeed.

As soon as I saw that commercial I thought, mav or someone was going to make a thread in here about how it was so disresepectful. I was pleasantly surprised when there wasn't one, but I guess it was just in another forum. Lol

Actually, the most surprising thing that didn't get mentioned that I figured would have was the fact Coke left God in.

Figured that would have stirred up some debate.

This is ahistorical. History actually tells us the opposite. First generation immigrants from Europe typically settled in immigrant communities. They continued to practice their own languages and own customs. Their children were often bilingual and bicultural, with an emphasis placed on their parents' languages and customs. Their children's children, that is the third generation, were usually the first to embrace English and to neglect the import and significance of their forebears' languages and cultures.

He is right..you do know what Balkanize means right? To break up into groups, to divide..

Coke should go do anthems of other countries in English in those countries. I am sure it would be a huge hit. Start in the Middle East, or Brazil, or Ukraine, etc, etc..
