Tennessee's assistant coaches were busy once again on Thursday and the Vols blanketed the state of Virginia and the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro area (DMV).

Zach Azzanni, Steve Stripling and Tommy Thigpen were in the area as the crew saw a number of underclassmen around the state as the Vols look to make Virginia more of a priority in the future.

Azzanni was in the Tidewater area and stopped in Ocean Lakes High School to see one of the top targets for the class of 2015, Jaason Lewis. Another Tennessee target at the school in the class of 2015 is linebacker Jahvoni Simmons.

Steve Stripling was in the Richmond, Va., area and the Vols offered 2015 Richmond defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell. Top prospects Ricky DeBerry and Garrett Taylor are also in the Richmond area and it's not farfetched to think Stripling stopped by their school as well as they both go to St. Christopher's.

in college football history, bruin?

Name one other job where a coach left for another college job and immediately everyone new they were getting a huge upgrade??

I am sure some worked out that way but not on the front end was such an upgrade so apparent IMO

Speaking of saban, here is a Texas joke --

Man from Texas was up visiting his cousin in Tennessee. And they were out for a drive along a country road. And across the road runs a deer.

Texas: "what was that?"
Tennessee: "that was a deer"
Texas: "you serious, man? In Texas, deer are waaaay bigger."

Tennessee man says nothing and keeps driving. They get on down the road apiece. And across the road slithers a rattlesnake.

Texas: "whoa what was that?"
Tennessee: "that was a rattler"
Texas: "no way dude. Snakes in Texas are so much bigger than that."

Tennessee man glares at his Texas cousin but keeps on driving. And a few minutes later
across the road crawls a decent-sized turtle.

Texas: "ha. What was THAT?"
Tennessee: " a tick"

I like your joke, but Texas Hill Country whitetail deer are actually quite small. The first time I saw them I said to my wife "Look at all the jackrabbits all over the road!"

Monday, the Vols were back in the weight room working out and moving forward with the birth of team #118. It was indeed helped by several veterans who have been around the team this week trying to help them set a tone for the critical off-season. Final exams started on Thursday and run through next Thursday. So players will be heading home sometime in the next 5-6 days. They will return starting the weekend of January 3rd as the spring semester will start on January 8th. The Vols will gather as a team around January 4. Butch Jones made clear to VolQuest.com that this offseason's program --- and remember players universally said last year's was tougher than ever --- would be tougher than ever.

The coaching staff was on the road most of the week recruiting, but head coach Butch Jones returned to the office on Thursday and began some exit interviews with those seniors leaving the program as well as a meeting with team #118. The exit interviews have been a staple of Jones' throughout his career as he uses them to help evaluate the season what worked, what wasn't as effective and why. Jones uses the information for everything from his winter workout plan, to spring practice, summer workouts, fall camp, and game prep during the season. It's also a time of very candid conversations when coaches and players may begin to agree that a player's future or players' futures may require strong examination. In other words, between now and May roster attrition is inevitable.

Then by all means don't turn any EEs away if attrition can open up a spot now over 14

Jon Grud......oh wait nvm

Not many win like Washington did today. Lose your coach, miss your top target in mora and get a guy who is most teams top target. I do have my questions as to how he will do outside of Boise but publically its a home run like the Saban to Bama and Meyer to OSU hires

Saban and Meyer took over for coaches that didn't get hired by other schools. That's the group I am looking at.

I know rational expectations for next season would be to have somewhere between a 5-7 win season.

This class is so f ***ing good that I think we could honestly contend for the East, in what projects to be a down year for this half of the SEC.

It looks like EVERY position is going to get an upgrade next year in a serious way.

QB - All three options should be MUCH improved. Ferguson apparently a great unknown option.

RB - Hurd.

WR - OMG, I just shat my pants - we go from the worst WR group to the best in the SEC.

OL - This one I guess could be argued as a downgrade. Talent is definitely going down with the departures - but let's be honest. These guys were softer than undercooked toll house cookies. I'm pretty sure Ron Swanson & Skeeter could have penetrated this line.

TE - Did we even have a tight end this year on the roster?

DL - I am a big fan of Hood and his story. Kid jumpkicked adversity in the mouth and was a great Vol. It's sad he was our best DL this year. McCullers wasn't built for this scheme and performed accordingly IMO. Williams/Lambert (if goes DT)/Mosley/Reed/Lamin would all be upgrades.

DE - I LOVE JSmith and CMiller - both seem like standup guys. Both never lived up to expectations though. I think we're bringing in a lot of good speed at this position - definitely excited.

LB - This incoming class is sick. Jakob Johnson, Mouhon, Weatherd, Bates, wow.

CB - Sutton is sick. Poor Coleman definitely just got recruited over. Too many great options there.

S- I actually think McNeil and Randolph (hopefully healthy next year) will both start next year. Randolph definitely looked out of sorts this year - looking forward to him being healthy. Here's my question for the gurus out there: During one of the games, the announcer said that they weren't playing FS/SS positions but rather both playing FS because they couldn't nail down the schemes fast enough - creating opportunities for offenses. Was this BS or not? If true, you'd figure an offseason could be huge at this position.

Goodbye Mike Shula, Hello Nick Saban.

Depends on when they leave and academic status. Just cuz you and a kid agree its time to transfer doesn't mean they can do it immediately. Some may have to finish school year etc.

This is all great stuff. Although I've learned over the years that VQ loves to talk up S&C every year like it's groundbreaking. I take that stuff with a grain of salt.

I am surprised that the exit interviews aren't an industry standard... that just seems like common sense.

Glad they are going to start turning over this roster in a serious way too.

Sarkisian and Peterson will forever be linked now.

USC turned their nose up at Peterson, and Peterson jumps into his seat after he's gone. Add this to the conference games they will be playing, and there will be very interesting conversations in the PAC for the next few years.

Haden will be a genius or a donkey

Does a coach retiring count?

I was thinking of South Carolina hiring Spurrier but I am not sure if Lou Holtz retired or was fired.

Nah not really.

I was just thinking about a coach leaving because they thought another job was better and that school that lost their coach coming our smelling like a Rose

my thoughts exactly

I say this in a joking way towards Bruin, so no hurt feelings.

So bruin made an assumption based on incomplete information, on a topic that is very very confusing to regular people, and was wrong? Color me surprised.

You can normally mess around with a kicker's schollie, but not the #1 or #2 kicker coming out of high school.

Also, I make a prediction that we don't blueshirt anybody. If we do, it's 2 or fewer.
