Biggest Phony In UT history (excluding Kiffin)

In the long run, we would be substantially worse off because it's too easy for opposing coaches to question the trustworthiness of a guy that repeatedly got caught lying. Why do you think we fired him?

You could be right, but I wouldn't remotely say that's definitive. When building a relationship with a recruit, it's easy to rationalize a lie about a barbeque -- which is the only thing to "discredit" his credibility.

"If he would lie to the governing body of the sport, why wouldn't he lie with all the promises he's making? Oh and look, he committed a violation exactly one day after crying about how sorry he was. Do you really want to trust that guy?"

Aaaaand the recruit is going elsewhere. Done.

The precedence is present that teenagers are easily swayed, yes. Thing is, it works both ways. Three great examples of coaches lying and still recruiting phenomenally are Meyer, Calipari and Saban. All three coaches made the declaration, "I'm not leaving 'X' place," only to leave 'X' place and thrive at their next destination.

You think current coaches don't religiously use the negative recruiting against them?

Precedent?

Anyway, those lies are a lot easier to justify than lying to the NCAA and recording phone calls. And, all three of those coaches have a track record of significantly improving the draft stock of their players and sending them to the next level. They have a lot more ammo on the recruiting trail than Pearl does, and all three are much better recruiters than he is either way.

Complete speculation. To a teenage kid, if anything, it's equal. Hell, to most people it's equal.

Irrelevant. The point wasn't whether or not he was equal to them; merely that previous coaches have lied and still had continual success.

Not to the governing body of their sport, though.
