He's shutting it off after tomorrow (Thursday)," said Ridgeland head coach Mark Mariakis. "They don't want anymore contact with anybody so I think all three schools are coming tomorrow and will make one last pitch to him. At that point he's going to shut it down and make his announcement on Wednesday."
"I'm going to meet this weekend with (the Bell family) and they are going to start the decision making process," Mariakis continued. "After Thursday there will be no more input from any of the colleges. It will be coach (Everett) Withers from Ohio State, Kirby Smart from Alabama, and I don't know if Tennessee is coming or which coaches they might be sending."
Bell wrapped up his official visits this past weekend with a trip to Tennessee. The Vols' coaching staff has had to work fairly quickly with the staff turnover and the trip to Knoxville was a success, according to Mariakis.
"It went very well," he said. "I think they were pleasantly surprised and just amazed at the visit. It really made an impact."
Ohio State got the first visit from Bell two and a half weeks ago and the Buckeyes have been right there in the hunt since day one.
"I think from the get go, they've had a strong relationship with coach (Urban) Meyer and coach Withers," Mariakis stated. "I think coach Withers has been so persistent on his calls and visits. Everything about him, Vonn and his family have been very impressed with."
Sandwiched between the Ohio State and Tennessee visits was a trip to Alabama. The Crimson Tide were believed to be the leaders at one point for Bell while the more recent rumors have them possibly running behind the Buckeyes and the Volunteers. Regardless of the validity of the rumors, the National Champs are still very much in the picture.
"Rumors are going to fly, that's just the nature of the beast," Mariakis said. "Alabama is still Alabama and he had a great visit with them. They've been on top of the phone calls and the visits and they just hired the new defensive backs coach, Greg Brown, I think he's coming tomorrow with Kirby Smart. He's come in before by himself and he's just tried to maintain that relationship with Vonn. They have done a great job staying on top of things in this whole process."
Things will likely be kept very tight-lipped over the next week and there will certainly be plenty of rumors but Mariakis maintains that there is a reason that a decision has not been announced yet and that is because a decision has yet to be made privately.
"I think it's really close," he said. "I think it's very taxing on him and that's why they are going to shut it off on Thursday, to give him three or four days to take everything in and try and come to a conclusion this weekend on what they are going to do. It's very emotional for him because all three schools have been amazing, very professional, and he's built a relationship with all of them."
