I agree that the stars are a good indicator of a player's potential, but I think when there is as much discrepancy as there is with Santos it's fair to be questionable. Ultimately a ton o factors play into how a player develops. Take Randall Conb for example. At UT he likely wouldn't have been THE guy, and he may not have played with the chip on his shoulder that he did at Kentucky. Who knows...

It's not an exact science, no.

But look at the teams who have won national championships in the past decade or so. Tebow, Reggie Bush, Vince Young, etc.

It matters. It's not perfect, but I'll take 20 5-star players over 20 3-star players all day long.

Agree? Would anyone disagree with me there? Generally speaking?

15 star (not really) Marlon Brown that we all whined about losing to Georgia...he's got about 200 yds receiving in 4 years in mop up

Da'Rick Rogers had over 1,000.

Your point?

Tennessee high school football recruits are almost ALWAYS over-rated. I've always said that.

edit: "highly rated" Tennessee h.s. recruits (Chris Donald, M. Brown, etc)

Would you take a class full of 4 and 5 star players over a class full of 2 and 3 star players.....

yes or no.

That should end the argument. If it doesn't, I'm quitting the argument anyway because you're crazy if you say no.

Of course not, but as we can see there are an extremely small number of 5 star guys. 4's are out there, and we are getting a fair amount. All I'm saying is that player development encompasses a ton more than simply their incoming hype.

Anyone that says no is in denial...

This happens every year...one of our borderline players isn't a 4* so the ratings are crap...nothing new to see here

Ok, so generally speaking we can all agree we'd rather take our chances on a 5* busting than a 2* or 3* "developing" into something.

Right?

This is true.

But there is no way anyone can argue logically that your avatar figure there should be a 3* with Rivals. That's where I have the beef with star rankings at times. At the end of the day I will take a coaches evaluation over Rivals, and if that makes us #14 vs #8 so be it...

Also, reference Brian Randolph.

...I'm a slow on the keyboard, seein' other responses.

Right?

Yes. Unless there is a large character issue. I feel like those are some of the things that generally tank the most talented players. Take Dyer for instance.

And 4-star and 5-star loaded Alabama is playing in the national championship game in 3 days against 4-star and 5-star loaded LSU.

I don't think they're using excuses.

Out of our 5 stars as of late only DaRick Rogers and Eric Berry have worked out. Unfortunately, stars dont account for discipline and character outside of ability...The 5 star casualty list...

Bryce Brown (character issues)
Janzen Jackson (character issues)
Chris Donald (complete miss)
Ben Martin (complete miss)
Kenny O'Neal (no comment)
Brent Vinson (character issues)
Walter Fisher (WHO???)
Morley...dang it

What say you???...stars??? Demico Ryans at Alabama was a 2 star. Im done:eek:lol:

Santos is a 4* on ESPN and Scout.

I ignore both of those, though. I go with Rivals. But Rivals isn't perfect either.

Santos is a 4* player. The knock on him is coverage skills as a MLB. That's it.

Do you feel like this is a concern with him when you consider everything else he brings to the table...IMO he's basically an ideal MLB except for this

lol... aahhh the old "5-stars have character issues" argument.

3* players are just as dumb and ignorant.

Ben Martin? Injuries.
J Jackson will still get drafted.
B Brown may also.

Again, Give me a class of 25 4* and 5* guys.

Maybe you can go recruit for Boise State. Ask Fulmer how his 2006 class worked out for him.

Nick Stephens, anyone?

100% agree

His back pedal is terrible (honest) and his hips aren't very good in coverage getting back to cover the middle. His sideline to sideline speed is actually very solid. That's all I can see that is holding him back at all.

Downhill against the run.. he is and will be a complete monster.

At the end of the day, I think that's the thing that most rational folks get tired of when people start freaking out, hair on fire, that we are going to suck because we're #12 vs #8 in Rivals ratings. It's not perfect, and no one will know the true value of a class for 3-4 years.

Two 3* guys from that class went pro. Granted Lee Smith had to tour with a few programs, get arrested for driving on the sidewalk, and beat up real bad in the locker room at Marshall.

Which is exactly what he'll be asked to do.

For Dime and Nickle packages, I see Maggitt being the man.

lol... two out of.....

Did you actually look at the names? That class almost sealed Fulmer's fate for him.. among other things.

No, I agree the class was garbage. Mainly wanted to trash Smith since we played against each other in high school...couple of fights around town, etc.

Umm I said he may.

No, I actually don't think he will. I made a thread about it saying I don't think he will. But alot of people do.

We will see. I bet he gets a shot though. Free agent or at least gets into a camp somewhere. I would be shocked if he doesn't get some type of shot.

One thing of note...

Look at the first round of last years NFL draft, then look at their star rankings out of high school. It was shocking how many were 2 and 3 stars vs 5 star. I honestly don't know if that was an anomaly though...

FTR....I don't want us to go after 2 and 3 stars, just pointing out we can argue this in circles. Would be a good drinking exercise....
