'12 SC WR Quinshad Davis

Shrine Bowl Practice Tues.

Davis was once again one of the most consistent and dominant receivers on the day, using his size and big, reliable hands to snatch the ball away from defenders and his sneaky speed to gain separation. He's not a burner and won't run away from many people, but he is a terrific possession receiver who can also be a deep threat because he's great at jump balls and in traffic.

Shrine Bowl Practice Wed.

Davis continued his outstanding week by making catch after catch in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Because of his size (6-3, 180), he has been a difficult matchup for South Carolina corners, who can't get good position against him. Davis hasn't blown anyone away with his speed, but he's quick out of his breaks and arguably has been one of the two most sure-handed receivers on hand.

How does he compare with Patterson skill-wise? I know Quinshad would have 4 years to play. Also, is Quinshad a EE or not?

He is not an EE, unfortunately. He seems to have a similar size and skill set to Justin Hunter but not quite as fast. Excellent hands, ability to separate from the defender, good route runner and jumping ability. JMO

I said this before, but for posterity I would prefer Davis over Patterson because we get him for 4 years. Patterson will be a great #1 for someone next year, but we have two guys that are top of the SEC class talents and both could leave for the NFL with good years next year. We need some guys behind them to develop and to keep WRU going once they are in the league. Patterson bridges a one year gap and adds anoth playmaker option, but doesn't do much for the long-term depth at the position.

The more Shrine Bowl reviews, the more I would love to see Quinshad on the hill. Hope we can figure out a way to make this happen...

Davis continues to impress, largely because of how effortless he is making things look. For a big-bodied receiver (he's 6-3, 180) he's pretty smooth. He has run good, precise routes, looked the ball in consistently well, and arguably has the best set of hands on site this week. It's hard to remember one ball thrown at him that hit the ground.

Sign him up.

Can we really take 5 WR? Or does someone get bumped for him?

Redding would be the only one that could get bumped, and I seriously doubt that will happen. There's been talk that Bowles and/or Redding could end up at DB instead, but that's just speculation.

If the staff can get Davis, you take him IMO.

Agreed, you can't turn down a player of Davis's caliber if he wants to come. I am done guessing how numbers are going to work out, there are too many moving parts to guess what the staffs plans are.

We will definitely sign a full class. The numbers will work themselves out...somehow. We've got a lot of really good players that we're in their final group. Plus, new names keep popping up. Also, just because you don't hear someone being discussed on VN or TOS doesn't mean we've necessarily cooled on some guys.

The real question is when is this staff going to land a big time back. Not decent, solid, or servicable.. I'm talking elite. It's the missing piece of the puzzle for the next couple years because I don't think Lane can carry that load.

I agree 100% with the your first statement.

With your second statement on Lane, I think some folks are being a bit premature on cutting him and his future off. You may be right (I hope you're not), but I just think its way too early to say he's a bust.

You actually can improve speed. UT rbs and wrs used to work with the men's track coach and would/did increase their speed. Unfortunately, that was long ago...Since Hamilton combined men and women's track under one coach (women's coach), I think the men's track program has suffered.

Need to rekindle the track/football two sport athletes in 100m , 200m and hurdles. Technique alone can increase "natural" speed.

I really like what this guy brings to the table. We could use someone who will aggressively go after the football. This guy sounds like the real deal.

The unfortunate thing about the success of young, big-time rbs like Lattimore, Richardson, Dyer, etc. are that there becomes the illusion they are the rule instead of the exception. They are exceptional/elite players, but I think Lane, if given time because he is a true freshman coming back from knee surgery, will be a very, very good/elite running back in the future. JMO.

I dont comment much on recruits unless they are from the upstate of SC...having said that, Davis likes UT and admires our two stud WR's!! We are in good as shape as anyone for this kid

I agree. Having had one, it takes 2 years to fully recover from an ACL reconstruction. It is especially that way with an RB so mentally they do not shy away from contact or hard cuts. ML has the instincts and just needs a scheme change to fully utilize his talents.

Seems some posters continue to miss that the scheme killed the power running game between the tackles. You cannot run delay handoffs all of the time to RB's 8-10 yards behind the line of scrimmage in the SEC. It will get them hurt and/or dancing to keep from it.
