Decompressing From The End Of The UT Game...

 Another ten round fight
No. I've been breaking one of my New Year's resolutions. I promised myself I wouldn't enter into debates with people whose IQ falls below the daily average high temperature in Dade County. I've failed miserably at that today, but I'm going to try and get back to adhering immediately.

Don't disappoint us

Your inability to play in college makes me laugh. So I'll laugh while I read my paper and drink my coffee. Moreover, I'm gonna laugh even more at the fact that you're an attorney. I can't think of a worse living on earth, and to top it off, you think you have it better than I do, being all Cosmopolitan and so close to the teams and such. Can I be you for a day. I've heard that you've slept with John Calipari. Can that be true? Just mind boggling what a person you've grown to be.....and still so young. Are you a Who's Who guy?

I can't recall anything as cliche as debasing lawyers. You should bring something stronger if you want to get at him. I'm sure he's grown immune to that kind of crap by now.

I was randomly looking at posts...and I mean RANDOMLY, but anyway...I was looking through some post in Dec. 2004 and saw these to quotes:

Do we ever come remotely close to selling out Thompson-Boling Arena? Why in the world did they build that place so big?

a pipe dream that Basketball would become as popular as football at UT

I thought it was kind of funny because this was before the Pearl era. And for those who make think I'm a loser, I seriously came on this by chance. I haven't been looking for hours or anything.

Given who the coach was in December of '04, both of those posts were right on the money.

A game they should have won. That loss epitomizes Buzz's career.

Jay Bilas talked about how good he was doing down there.. He seems to think he'll get another shot at a bigger program.. I just don't see it happening.. We'll see if there is any hope left. I wouldn't be suprised if he eventually runs that program into the ground as well.

Bilas has been up buzz's rear end for a few years now....

Their friendship goes back to the days when Buzz was "Jordan's Roommate".. Unfortunatley, that's likely all Buzz will be known for during and after his career.

Wow. I go out of town for a few days and all manner of hell breaks loose. Nontheless, unable to resist:

(1) Buzz Peterson is a perfectly fine mid-major coach. In a year or two, he may get Coastal to the Dance, and maybe they'll pull off one of those #14-#3 upsets, and he'll suddenly be a hot commodity and somebody will give him another shot at the "Big Time." Somebody like, oh, I don't know, Michigan. But the fact is, Buzz was prepared to bring in Don DeVoe and Eddie Fogler as assistants, had he been granted one more year, and their job would be to "coach the coach." Basically, that's flat-out admitting that he was in way over his head all along at the helm of an SEC program.

(2) Calipari won't ever coach at UK. He doesn't fit the profile. The UK boosters would rather have homegrown talent - Billy Donovan will be at the top of the wish list, as Hat said, and they'll offer him the moon and stars to jump ship. And he just might take it, especially if this is Tubby's last year - Billy's looking at a pretty bare cupboard next year. If not, they'll bring in Travis Ford and John Pelphrey for interviews and ultimately hire the one that comes across more impressive. There is a LOT of anti-Tubby sentiment in Lexington right now, and deservedly so - his current junior class was supposed to be the best in the country, and they haven't amounted to anything.

(3) UT has to win 1 of the last 3 SEC games to actually punch their ticket. The resume is not finished yet. A win over Florida would obviously offset 2 more road losses. On the other hand, beating either Arkansas or Georgia on the road would get them to 20 wins, 8-8 in the SEC, and a Top 20 RPI. Even if they get drilled at home by Florida, that's good enough to get in.

Billy's looking at a pretty bare cupboard next year.

His starting lineup will be gutted by graduation and the NBA...but he is bringing in an outstanding class next year, including 4 top 75 players, 3 of whom are considered top 10 nationally at their respective positions.

Yet, as great as the incoming talent is in Gainesville, I'm sure he could recruit just as well in Lexington.

If Gregg Marshall stays at Winthrop, Buzz is always going to be playing for second place.

1.As hat said, If Marshall is still there he won't make it to the Big Dance. Unless Gregg gets that offer to a higher calling, it's going to very tuff for Buzz. He's also losing two of his better players this year.

2.I don't think Billy is going anywhere. Plus, his cupboard is not empty next year.. Spades will be a very good big for them and their bringing in a guard in Nick Calathes who can make an immediate impact next year. (Might get Patterson as well.. top 10 player)

3.I agree with you.. But, I would still rather face the selection committee with at least one road win in conference play.

Calapari is just as homegrown as Pitino, and seems to be cut from a similar personality mold. He also drilled Pitino in the regular season meeting in '96, which in the minds of most Cat fans means he is consequently the second greatest coach of the modern era.

While I agree that Donovan would be the clear favorite--as you said he is homegrown due to the fact that he played in New England and has approximately 1/3rd of the Lexington ties as David Hobbs--I'm not sure he would see a move to UK as a step up from Gainesville, who will surely throw some celestial bodies his way as well.

As for Ford or Pelphrey, neither has yet proven they belong at the helm of one of the top programs in college basketball. While both may ultimately prove to be good college coaches, if the job were to open next year, hiring either at this point in their respective careers would be a mistake that I personally wouldn't mind seeing Mitch B make.

I would certainly not say "never" on Cal, though, and if I were pulling the strings in horse country, his name would be near the top of any search list.

Could you not say the same thing about Billy Donovan, at a similar point in his career? Andy Kennedy? Bruce Pearl?

The Big Blue Nation seems to crave a return to good old-fashioned (yeah, right, old as in 15 years ago) Kentucky basketball values (uptempo, shoot the 3, press, basically what UT is trying to do now.) Since Pelphrey and Ford played under Pitino's run-and-gun system, I think the assumption would be that they would be the best qualified (other than Donovan, of course) to reinstate it.

This doesn't mean Ford or Pelphrey are necessarily the best options for UK's future, of course.

Ford will have enough pull to be granted an interview. Pelphrey may not. I don't think Calipari will be a consideration. They would take Mike Anderson (as a politically correct hire) before another "outsider" is considered. "Ten Loss" Tubby is the new moniker in Lexington, but his seat is really no hotter than CPF's.

While Donovan is always a hot topic, I don't have a good read on his interest level, and must defer to people that know people. However, I can say, regardless of popular opinion on this board, basketball in Florida will always be entertainment until next football season. In Kentucky it is the complete opposite.

With Frank Broyles retiring, Mike Anderson might actually get a legitimate interview with an SEC school now.
