yet has been very average in the playoffs.......at times it was like two different players.
i think for the most part, the criticism of the Colts and PM was justified in the playoffs. they could never make the play, whether it was the D or PM, that put 'em over the top...
...and the series between the Colts and pats will now be looked on as a rivalry where two great teams and two great qb's went head to head for the better part of this decade. it will have it's place along side John Elway's Drive, Joe Montana's Catch, etc, etc, etc.....
kudos to the Colts whole team. everyone stepped up, including PM when it mattered.
I think it was a changing of the guard when this happened. At the time Larry Marmie was Defensive Cordinator and he was let go at the end of the season. As everyone knows CPF went with Chavis as his defensive cordinator and Lovie Smith left. As far as I know it came down to Smith and Chavis but CPF went with Chavis because he knew he would stick around and not try to move on to the NFL.:twocents:CPF fired Lovie Smith who then went to AZ as a DB coach.
As another poster said, I think that's a perception that's been thrown out there which has served to revise history. At times, he's played average. At other times, he's played better than most any SB winning QB.
The COLTS as a team haven't been able to play well enough. Thus, if he doesn't play extremely well, they've tended to fold in all other areas and lost.
And here is the major double standard used by some; that the Colts and Pats have been a major rivalry. I don't see it. The Pats have been one of the best teams in the history of the NFL. The Colts are not close to that. If you switched Brady and Manning the results would probably have been about the same.
The difference is that Brady has had a complete team surrounding him. All the pieces on a good team work together. PM has had to carry his team on his back most of the time -- and with an avg at best defense along the way.
Yep. Eddie went for 162 that day.
Peyton was actually 19/43 for 227 yards with no TDs or INTs.

I am going to have to say that Peyton Manning is on the verge of greatness. If the Colts beat the Bears, then Manning goes down in history as one of the three best QBs to every play the game.
in the eyes of some....that's exactly what would happen. What if he plays great but the Bears win based on a few big plays (e.g. Devon Hester) - he's then not great?
Manning has never had as good of a team around him as did Brady during his SB victories, in my opinion.
This is true. New England's defenses in 2001, 2003, and 2004 have always been better than Indy's in those same years. However, in 2005, Indianapolis had a defense as good or better than the 3 NE defenses.
