Peyton To The Super Bowl...

yet has been very average in the playoffs.......at times it was like two different players.

i think for the most part, the criticism of the Colts and PM was justified in the playoffs. they could never make the play, whether it was the D or PM, that put 'em over the top...

...and the series between the Colts and pats will now be looked on as a rivalry where two great teams and two great qb's went head to head for the better part of this decade. it will have it's place along side John Elway's Drive, Joe Montana's Catch, etc, etc, etc.....

kudos to the Colts whole team. everyone stepped up, including PM when it mattered.

As another poster said, I think that's a perception that's been thrown out there which has served to revise history. At times, he's played average. At other times, he's played better than most any SB winning QB.

The COLTS as a team haven't been able to play well enough. Thus, if he doesn't play extremely well, they've tended to fold in all other areas and lost.

And here is the major double standard used by some; that the Colts and Pats have been a major rivalry. I don't see it. The Pats have been one of the best teams in the history of the NFL. The Colts are not close to that. If you switched Brady and Manning the results would probably have been about the same.

The difference is that Brady has had a complete team surrounding him. All the pieces on a good team work together. PM has had to carry his team on his back most of the time -- and with an avg at best defense along the way.

CPF fired Lovie Smith who then went to AZ as a DB coach.
I think it was a changing of the guard when this happened. At the time Larry Marmie was Defensive Cordinator and he was let go at the end of the season. As everyone knows CPF went with Chavis as his defensive cordinator and Lovie Smith left. As far as I know it came down to Smith and Chavis but CPF went with Chavis because he knew he would stick around and not try to move on to the NFL.:twocents:

Point well made. The Pittsburgh Steeler DEFENSE turned Terry Bradshaw into a legend by winning SBs. Manning's D has turned him into a legend by forcing the O to put up 45 pts a game to win, and he's done it......a lot. Just tough to do week after week as opposing teams get better.

I'm really hoping that Peyton can smash the Bears. I can't believe what I'm reading in another forums. Many people are saying that Peyton never beat the Gators while at UT, that he is a total loser/choker (even after beating the Pats), and that he will never win the big one. I don't want to say that I'm confident that the Colts are going to win because I don't want to jinx them. I'm really hoping that Peyton and the Colts can win this one and show the world that it WAS NOT LUCK (as they are saying)that they beat the Chiefs, Ravens, and Patriots.

p.s - Peyton isn't a gator bait because he isn't playing those reptiles.

Go VOLS! and wishing the best of luck to the Colts!

how is it not true? did Clausen not win twice in the Swamp while Grossman was Spurrier's starting QB (2001 and 2003)?

Grossboy left after '02, I believe. '03 was Leak's first year. He didn't start against us, but I'm pretty sure he got a good bit of playing time.

yep, you're right. JAllen. sorry about that, I was reading about Grossman playing in the 2003 Outback Bowl, which would have been after the 2002 season. Still, Clausen won twice in the Swamp while Peyton never won there. It's obvious who is the better QB though, and all this garbage about Peyton vs. Grossman being UT vs. UF redux is just silly.

I am going to have to say that Peyton Manning is on the verge of greatness. If the Colts beat the Bears, then Manning goes down in history as one of the three best QBs to every play the game.

Tony Dungy made me laugh with his quote:

Peyton Manning is a great player and anybody that doesn't know that doesn't know much about football

What if he plays great but the Bears win based on a few big plays (e.g. Devon Hester) - he's then not great?

in the eyes of some....that's exactly what would happen.

here's one for you...the stats below are of a qb...all time playoff records, including sb appearances:
ALL TIME 3rd highest Passer rating at 95.0 behind Bart Star and Joe Montana.......

ALL TIME higest yard per completion.......8.8

All TIME LONGEST PASS completion for TD......85 yards

Tied for all time most road wins in the playoffs.....with Roger Staubach and Len Dawson

2nd all time highest passer rating in a SB for qb starting his 1st SB at 113.6

Played in arguably the best Super Bowl ever played.

do you know who this guy is?

Jake Delhomme.

NO one ever remembers the loser of the spuer bowl, no matter how well you play in it, or, in most cases, how well you played on your way to it.

Manning has always had better offensive units than Brady. Last season, the Colts had one of the best defenses in the league.

I think Aikman and Manning had similiar situations.

Manning has never had as good of a team around him as did Brady during his SB victories, in my opinion.

to be fair, he did say offensive units...i don't think anyone would disagree that over the course of time the pats held the definitive edge on the defensive side of the ball.

This is true. New England's defenses in 2001, 2003, and 2004 have always been better than Indy's in those same years. However, in 2005, Indianapolis had a defense as good or better than the 3 NE defenses.

I don't wholesale agree with that. Not being a smartass. But I don't think they were as good as their ranking. Although, it is pretty difficult to prove my point, numbers are numbers.
