Peyton To The Super Bowl...

I was referring to the BIG ONE at the appropriate level.

Obviously ich ben ein Bear in two weeks because of Grossman. Also because Chicago is my favorite big city in the U.S. But Manning is a great talent and if he wins it I'll be happy for him.
I thought we've already been through this, it's Ich BIN ...:shakehead:

I knew someone had corrected me somewhere along the way here on that, but I couldn't remember who or what the correction was. Thanks!

I can see it now.... Colts lose....Peyton gets hurt next year.....Sorgi leads them to next years SB victory!

Not to single you out LG but why is the "big one" always qualified when it comes to PM.

He lost to UF in the regular season - this is considered a big game yet winning the SEC championship game the same is not considered a big game.

Each playofff game is a big one since you must win to advance, he has now won 6 (and lost 6) yet these too aren't considered "big" save for the last one. However, if the Colts lose SB people will still say PM can't win the big one

To be completely honest, I was actually sort of mocking those that still cannot get past the fact that, as great a player as he was, he never beat Florida.

I don't care at all. The guy is a tremendous quarterback. But there are still many UT fans that mutter something about that under their collective breath. Don't really know why.

I hear ya. I kind of look at it this way; he was a great college QB at a time when Florida was at it's historic best. He's a great pro QB when the Patriots are at their historic best.

I understand the big game argument (determining greatness); I just don't buy it.

Well he was 3-6 prior to this Postseason. That sucks.

Got the first step done by finally beating Patriots in a playoff game. Large hump to get over for him.

In two weeks it'll be... :toast:

I think it depends on the circumstances.

For excample, I have always had a not-so-secret dislike for Dan Marino. Even though you cannot argue with his numbers, you can look at his history with the Dolphins and see that he could just never get it done when it counted.

The Dolphins, during Marino's reign, made the steady spiral into mediocrity we've seen for the last 5 years there.

The Colts, on the other hand, have blossomed under PM. Overall they seem on the move. And that's up, not down. I think Manning does everything he can for that team and he is truly in command out there. Get them some defense and they are right there.

I disagree that winning an SB is the defacto litmus test (necessary but not sufficient) to be considered a great QB.

I think Marino was a great QB both at the collegiate and pro level.

To be fair, that's more an indictment on the Colts than it is Manning.

There are, for whatever reason, a lot of double standards used to evaluate PM that are thrown out the window for other people. It's probably because he is so good.

I'm extremely happy for Peyton. Nobody plays harder than he does and he has finally made it to the Superbowl.

I'm happy for Peyton! Not only is he a great QB, but he's personable, humble and makes funnier commercials that other past and present QBs.

While I'm a die-hard Gator, I also am a die-hard Niner, so $#@! anyone who plays for the Bears! Grossman is dead to me!

Go Colts!

yet has been very average in the playoffs.......at times it was like two different players.

i think for the most part, the criticism of the Colts and PM was justified in the playoffs. they could never make the play, whether it was the D or PM, that put 'em over the top.

they did a whole lot to erase that image yesterday....when in the beginning it was looking like it was going to be the same old story.

the fact they had to come from behind by 3 scores to tie it was impressive...and should they go on to win the SB, that game against the patriots will be one of the first things you will remember about PM. not the previous "choke jobs" so to speak.

and the series between the Colts and pats will now be looked on as a rivalry where two great teams and two great qb's went head to head for the better part of this decade. it will have it's place along side John Elway's Drive, Joe Montana's Catch, etc, etc, etc.....

kudos to the Colts whole team. everyone stepped up, including PM when it mattered.

But he hasn't been average in the playoffs as a whole.

His game against KC was virtually a perfect QB rating. He's had great games, good games and average games. His QB rating in the loss against the Steelers was better than all the QB's that lost and half the QB's that won.

He played poorly against the Pats (helped by mugging of his receivers to the point the NFL made rule changes).

PM entered the league with the label of choker and he's been fighting uphill ever since.

It was nice to see a reversal of fortune with Peyton engineering the winning drive and Brady throwing the fatal pick.

Peyton was in a zone. On that last drive from his back foot he dropped a 30 yard pass right into Dallas Clarks hands near the sideline while double covered. It doesn't get any better than that!

PM has not played subpar in the playoffs - just primarily against the Pats (until this year).

In 2003, he had a perfect passer rating against the Broncos, followed by a near perfect passer rating against the Chiefs the following week. It was in NE where he struggled.

In 2004, he went for 27/33; 457 yards and 4 TD's against the Broncos but struggled in the "mug" bowl against NE.

In 2005, he went for 290 and a TD against the Steelers (rating equal to his average) but the Colts lost.

Of those 6 games, only two were below average performances.

Other playoff games: 1999 - can't find stats - lost to Titans 19-16. 2000 - played well (led Colts on last minute drive, Vanderjagt missed 49 yd FG to win, Colts lost in OT as a 6th seed in the AFC); 2002 - played poorly against Jets in blow-out loss.

Overall playoff stats prior to this year:

Completion %: 60
YPG: 273
TDs: 15
INTs: 8

Hardly subpar numbers.

I still can't believe that Harper couldn't get by Big Ben on the fumble return and score a TD to win it.
