Update on new strength coach

Hey, I remember a certain person telling me that genetics was THE major factor in how fast a person was...and not training. Well, I suppose all of our players magically got a mutation in their fast gene since McKeefery signed on.
That person was prolly a Jew whose family worked with shiny metals and yeah that's exactly what happened. :ermm:

Nobody that works out aims for 10 reps every set. Most work outs involve some sort of pyramid. You might start out doing a set of whatever weight for 10 reps then add weight & do the next set at 8 reps. Every work out is a little different but rarely do you see anybody worthy of mentioning doing 4 sets of 10 with one weight.

Pyramidding is a different philosophy. It depends on the trainer. I was always taught that pyramidding was bad because it doesn't help you build by progressively overloading, you peak and then wind down instead of pushing until failure to constantly raise your limit.

At anytime in any cycle of strength/power training, nearly any set/rep/load routine can be beneficial. The magic is in finding the right combination and applying them at the appropriate times.

The Ruskies were famous for pyramid sets with increasing/decreasing loads mid cycle (of a period - 8-10 weeks).

The best trainers start each training period with an idea of what might work best. Then adjust on the fly.

Not impressed really.

My friend showed me a program in increase my bench by 50 pounds in 7 weeks, and it worked, several times.

Who knows,Maybe your friend can be the next S&C coach on the hill. i would send this post into Hammy and maybe some before and after pics of that gunshow you were describing earlier, sounds like a solid resume to me.

Lol. If you don't think genes are a very very important aspect of it you're kidding yourself. Even the bodybuilders that juice have great genetics. It's not like any guy can juice & become Mr universe. I could go down a different road but all I will say is look at the majority of athletes in football & basketball & track. Hard work & training only gets you so far.

I studied organismal biology for four years. I don't think speed is most influenced by genetics.

You didn't see the summer Olympics in Athens? The local hero qualifying race after race outrunning world class sprinters even though they were born more genetically advanced for that sport? Then when he took the piss test before the finals he didn't even bother showing up because he was juicing? Remember that? Your hypothesis of the genes being an unbreakable barrier is false.

Lol. So to beat genetics you need to use performance enhancers & without them you're nothing. Ok I got ya. But with good genetics & performance enhancers what would that be? Ben Johnson? Jimmy the Greek was actually right when he said what he did although politically incorrect.

You're the one preaching genes. That somehow its some impossible barrier to break through when that is simply not true. Read up on myostatin and its effects in bodybuilding or performance sports and come back and we'll talk genes.

Lol. How the hell do you legally break your genetics. Yea training helps everybody but everybody has different natural limits & that is a fact. You can go through your entire dictionary but myostatin directly correlates with an individuals genes & muscle growth nobody's is the same.

Natural limits? For the last several years I've studied diet and nutrition and along the way been educated by athletes of various types on a number of subjects such as power, strength, agility, speed, etc., and NOT ONE SINGLE TIME did I meet someone who had reached this "natural limit" you speak of.

Unless you're referring to the fact that you're 5'6". That's a natural limit. But even that can be manipulated during youth.

I have to believe that genetics influence every part of a person's physical and mental capabilities. HOWEVER, I believe that practice and training will improve one's abilities. HOWEVER again I also believe there is upper limit to the amount of improvement in any given area. Otherwise you would see d-liners running 4.4's with 45" vertical jumps. I bet Shaun Ellis was wishing he could have gotten to a 4.4 on that pick-6 all those years ago. Dude looked like he was gonna die! What got him there was mental toughness... He just was not gonna stop!

There's no argument that genetics influence ability. The fact is that genetics is not an imaginary brick wall that can't be passed. Ellis didn't get to the NFL because of his genetics, he got there because of extensive training and hard work. His genes determined his natural height and weight, but that wouldn't be enough to get him there, he had to do more than what he just naturally had.

Yeah like Michael Phelps' genetics don't make him a better swimmer. His body is practically made for it.

Good point. He just jumped in the pool and won a gold medal.

Just so I can try to get a better bead on your stance answer me this; absolutely regardless of how much training and nutrition is involved what percentage of the population do you think is capable of running a sub-10.00 sec 100 meters? Having a 45+" vertical? Benching 500lbs?
