The Weightlifters Thread

Also, yes, first two weeks of January is hell at the gym. So is every Monday at around 6pm. That's why I work out either very early in the morning or very late at night, else I end up having to wait 5-10 minutes for a spot to open up, which irritates me and ruins my workout.

This is why I let my gym membership go. I bit the bullet and finished putting together my home gym. I hate the crowds and dealing with the teenie boppers mentioned above. It sucks when you are killing the weights and have to sit back and wait for some goofball hog up the space and the machines.

Nice. Wish I could, but I know that I'd have to amass a small fortune and get loaded rich before I could afford to build a home gym to my specs. I use machines maybe 5% of the time at most and only for very specific lifts, the rest of the time is bars/dumbbells/ez-curl/cable and calisthenics.

All I would need is a sturdy rack, an adjustable bench, pull up bar, dip bar, and enough weights and I'd be set. Oh, and a floor that could handle dead lifts.

Somebody wears wife beaters to the gym :)

I've never had any or witnessed any run ins at the gym.

Milo's right, some girls make it very hard not to glance.

Actually I wear the cut up shirt on upper body days because I like to get a look at my lats.

My pet peeve is the social nature of the gym (because it gets in the way of what I'm doing). I don't talk to anyone, and I refuse workout partners unless it's someone I know for sure I can count on.

I hate when people use the squat rack for other lifts. Especially when there are quite a few people in the gym and there is only one.

Right there with you on that! Today was legs for me, my gym has 3 squat racks. All 3 were taken at the same time today with not a single one doing squats. One girl was using a bunch of those ropes to do push ups, a wrinkled old man had a bungee cord tied to one and had it stretched halfway across the room, and a douchebag wearing Dr Dre headphones had an incline bench pulled up to one even though both incline benches were available. That got me more fired up than the three scoops of Jack3d I took.

I use the power rack for barbell bench press so I don't have to have a spotter (I use the bumpers to go to failure). I wonder if I'm hated. There's only 1, but there are 2 squat racks and 2 smith machines.

Power rack is a different story, especially when there are multiple other spots to squat. At my gym, there is one squat rack and one smith machine. No power rack.

That sucks. Two squat racks, two power racks and two Smith machines at mine.

Although I've never used the Smith before.

That sucks. One of my favorite lifts is flat bench on the power rack and I set the bumpers an inch above my chest. Slow negatives and then let the bar rest on bumpers for a 1 count before going up so that you can't use any reflexive action to lift the weight. It's really hard.

I use the smith machine maybe twice a month when I decide I want to do shrugs with a behind-the-back grip.

Anybody else have an influx of HS kids in wife beaters at their gym?

Yea have one kid who thinks he is the shiz and lets it be known to everyone.... but there are some Dbags that are just very loud and obnoxious that are in there from roughly 6 to 9 so I get to listen to them everynight....

What are some of you guys favorite Bi and Tri routines cuz I was just looking to change my routine up some...TIA

I can't do any sort of dynamic arm exercises because of my left rotator cuff. To cover both flexion and supination, I have to do one palms up/down and one palms in for curls and extensions.

So basically, for biceps I'll do preacher curls then hammer curls. For triceps I prefer dips much over anything else for results since it has so many synergists, but overhead dumbbell extensions are the most satisfying. Repping the hell out of 110lbs. over the back of your head feels amazing. But I can only do that if my shoulder doesn't hurt too much that day and I'm careful not to smack my forehead getting the weight over... Reason no. 1 why I hate the rubber dumbbells everyone uses. One of the gyms I go to has only iron for everything over 70 lbs though, which is sweet.

I almost always do seated incline dumb bell curls.

Those ones are tough. I never see the brotards at the gym do this, they're all lifting 50 lb dumbbells with their backs. They'd probably be lucky to properly rep 20's with that.

I can barely do my full sets of 30's, but because of my shoulder I have to keep palms up the whole time which can be way difficult.

Anyone in here ever heard of a "T-Rex Complex"? In high school all I ever did was work my legs... now that I'm back in the gym, I need to relearn all of the upper body exercises that I never did in HS.

 no but that's pretty good.

Obviously every gym has those guys who do nothing but upper body.

Also, pull ups, rows, bench press, shoulder press and upright rows should get you started for a couple months.

Plenty of those around. Never heard of anybody just working lower body unless volatile is referencing running.

I also used to do mainly legs when I was playing ball in hs.

How many sets do you guys like to hit for each bodypart?
I change it up, but tonight was somewhat typical (chest and back): One warm-up set of 15 slow reps 60%-ish weight, then a set of 10, 5-10% bump up in weight and a set of 8, then back down and another set of ten, then another if I was feeling it.

Tom Platz.

I'm finding it really hard to get in a good workout at the gym. When I worked out at home, I followed a dvd, total body strength training, and it used light weights and hi reps. I want to take advantage of all the machines (some of them I LOVE!!!) at the gym, but I don't have a good idea of how to make progress yet.
